Kinda bummed...
Hey all,
I know banana season is ending for us in Zone 8b and man it's my fault because I didn't even get into them until the first week of August. Now it's the last week of September and I haven't anything to report that good. My orinoco in a pot put out a whole new leaf over this time. The basjoo in the pot did ABSOLUTELY nothing except get some black spots. The orinico in the ground put out a new leaf but has been stuck there (the wide part of the leaf right up to the PS and leaf sticks up) for several weeks. Plus, I think I didn't water enough last week (it was supposed to be fall) and the whole thing turned a tiny bit yellow. The basjoo in the ground has all but lost one sad leaf, although it did come forth with a small leaf about 4" long. BTW, these plants are relatively small (11" and 4" PS) As soon as I get the GH house set up, they'll go in there but does anyone have any words of encouragements or growth tips, maybe to kick off next season? Re: Kinda bummed...
Bananas are the most interesting plants to grow, when you get to know their needs. When I started growing bananas I killed ALOT of plants, because I knew nothing of the high light requirements, high water requirements, and high fertilizer requirements.
Sounds to me like you have not watered these plants enough. (I know the PNW has been hot this late-summer) Check that the soil is well draining, put the plants in a light spot, and plant them in the ground next year! When planting out in spring, the leaves on the plant will burn! But then, new leaves coming out will be OK. |

NOOO. DO NOT GET BUMMED. I started just a little while ago too. There are high points, and low points. BUT. I guarantee that by next spring you will be happy you didnt toss those plants. lol PATIENCE:bananas_b Keep hangin in there.

Re: Kinda bummed...
Thanks guys for your "pep" talk hehe. Yeah, I should have started earlier in the season and with bigger plants as a beginner.
I'll just try to save the ones I have this winter and really be dedicated and start early next year. J |
