Just got my first Ae Ae
I recently registered on this board. I was previously a lurker, logging on as a guest. On Wednesday I received my first Ae Ae plant from Bananas.org poster djmb74. When I saw this offer, I decided to go ahead and register. I highly recommend purchasing djmb74 if you have the opportunity in the future.
This guy hand crafted a 5 ft cardboard box into the shape of an elongated triangle around the bubble wrapped (yes bubble wrapped) Ae Ae banana plant but not before filling the voids in the box with newspaper. The actual plant was wrapped in newspaper. On top of the newspaper was bubble wrap. On top of the bubble wrap was crumpled newspaper to fill the void in the peak of the pyramid. I should have taken pictures of the box. This was an incredible feat of engineering. The corm was also kept hydrated with wet moss (and not that cheap sphagnum moss....this looked like the Australian stuff) in a plastic bag. I had no idea it was going to be shipped that well. My kids aren’t this safe in their car seats. Summertime shipping can be risky because of the heat but regular USPS Priority Mail does get a package from Florida to Michigan in two days. The way he packaged this thing, it could have been shipped on the back of a camel through the desert and it would have made it out fine. It was mailed on Monday (maybe late Monday. djmb74 would have to confirm) and received Wednesday. Pictures of the plant taken right out of the box. |

Re: Just got my first Ae Ae
Wow, quite the praise! I had no idea Martin was such a cardboard box architect! Better stop with the praise or it'll go to his head LOL. Plant looks wonderful...hope you enjoy it and have success with it.

Re: Just got my first Ae Ae
Well thanks for such a big compliments. Glad you got it in such short time. I just packed it like I would any of my babies... hehe
I actually almost didn't sell it to him until he made me feel a little more confident that he knew what he was getting into with an Ae Ae, which he obviously did. Best of luck with it, and keep giving updates on your progress with it.

Re: Just got my first Ae Ae
Congratulations. When I saw the thread title, I said to myself how long will it be before I can write one too? In the meantime I'll have to settle for my Stuttgart cannas.Your plant is gorgeous; enjoy it. And kudos to Martin!!
