Default Jurassic Jungle Timeline

Here is the latest timeline from my garden near Cincinnati, Ohio. It starts last November 2007 and goes up to yesterday - July 31, 2008 & gets updated about once a week. Pics include: musa basjoo, cavendish, zebrina, elephant ears, castor beans and wysteria on the arbor. Not the pace I had last year but its starting to pick up.

Looks great! Reminds me of my set-up. Look in my gallery and I think you'll see the similarities.

12' is awesome. I bought my first one last year. The place I bought it from called it "Haynes Stiffie"...I would be happy to get to 3' this year. Not sure thats going to happen. Right now its on its third fan of the year and now has an obvious trunk. I'm going to try to winter it this year for the first time with an insulated box & xmas lights. Keeping fingers crossed. Where's Al Gore?

I was able to overwinter 2 Trachycarpus fortunei, a Sabal minor and a Livistona chinensis by the straw mulch method. However all the palms were relatively small. I now have two 5 footers (T. fortunei) and a Butia on the way. They're too tall so I'll try either the cage method or making a styrofoam container.
Growing palms in the north is nothing if not living on the edge!

Near or after the first light frost I cut them down to a few inches above the soil, dig up, divide/break apart, spray all the dirt off the roots w/ hose, trim roots, arrange on a flat cart or similar and let dry in the sun for at least a few days or more, continue air drying on cart(I have a barn)for a few weeks(long as you can), then stack in boxes and eventually bring down to my basement before its too cold out - for me, sometime in late Novemeber. While still in the barn, I normally cover them up at night w/ a blanket if it's in the 20's at night...

Last year I filled up 2 Chiquita banana boxes with EE's - large bulbs only. Btw, once they are dry(November/Dec), I have never had any mold & all grew this year. I used to store them in cocoa shells(mulch). Now no mulch.
I have found that trying to overwinter EE's outside in my zone w/ extra mulch piled over them yeilds much smaller EE's if any. I have few and they are funny looking...Probably alot easier, but I like big EE's...

BTW, anyone in Cincinnati who wants some this fall, let me know.
