Japanese Beetle attack
Hi there
Well it looks like this week is the start of Japanese beetle season in Pennsylvania. My canna lilies, paw paw trees, and bananas are under attack. Surprisingly, the basjoo and velutina are the main targets. My veinte cohol, patupi, bluggoe style plants haven't had any signs of beetle snacking. So I grabbed my neem oil and have been misting my leaves with a diluted mixture. It seems to have minimized damage. I am curious what do other people use to stop beetles and also do you notice that the beetles have similar preferences in which banana plants they attack? Thanks Erik G |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
OH no I realize I should have posted this in Health/Maintenance but can't figure out if it is possible to move / delete the post.
Sorry! |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
EH.. Only a few anal retentive types really care much... Most of us are more easy going plus we mostly just hit the " new posts" button on top to see what's new anywhere on the boards... Don't sweat it.
BUT.. Don't do it again or the fine is 10,000 banana bucks! :D :D |

I did not use any kind of spray on them but I did see the turkeys get the low ones. And I must admit I did squeeze a few that were "stuck together":ha: I discovered an Ensete Maurelli with a good case of caterpillars too. |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
I'm in Illinois and the beetles are the worst this year than I have ever seen....out of the 4 different kinds of banana plants that I have, they like the musa basjoo's the best. They don't seem to bother the others. I have used liquid sevin on them which seems to have worked.

Re: Japanese Beetle attack
I can't remember how it works, but i had heard that planting tulip poplar and dwarf tulip poplar helps.

Re: Japanese Beetle attack
Don't think that tulip poplars help with the beetles as I have 2 on my property and my neighbor has one and we are both overtaken by the Japanese beetles. Thanks for the message, though.

Re: Japanese Beetle attack
Interesting that basjoo seems to be a favorite! Not just my observation :)
I've used seven in the past and may try it again in the future. I have enough neem oil for another year. The beetle attacks are gone for now anyway. Never heard about tulip poplars. I would be surprised if that helped. The japanese beetles are pretty persistent. Thanks Erik |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
Sevin would be my recommendation...
Where in Illinois? I used to live in west central between two tiny towns called Ellisville and Fairview.. At the corner of No and Where. We are discussing the shiny black beetles that sheen different colors and eat peaches to the pit within hours of ripening, right? |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
I'm in the little town (pop.300) of Kinderhook, about 10 miles from the Mississippi River (Hannibal, MO..Mark Twain's home town) in Ill. It seems the Basjoos leaves are a little thinner than the D. Cavendish (that I have the most of) and the beetles enjoy the edges of the leaves. Yes, they are dark brown hard shelled beetles that have a shinny green on them. They will devour a rose in minutes. Sevin has changed it's formula and not as fast acting or good as the old Sevin. You think they are gone and then another big 'hit' to everything in their way.

Re: Japanese Beetle attack
Hello all,, mine are under attack right now in S E Missouri,, You all might want to check yours closely, and mine are Basjoo's also.
They seem to be back this year in full force !!!!! I use Fertilome broad spectrum insecticide on mine and it seems to work well |
Re: Japanese Beetle attack
I noticed them here in Illinois the past few days....been spraying with liquid Sevin which controls them for me. They like the Basjoos (don't seem to like my dwarf cavendish), roses, grapes and Spring flowering trees, but it seems they will eat anything.
