Irkutsk botanical garden.

All hello! I recently have visited our Irkutsk botanical garden. Here there is some photo. At them in a collection was only 3 kinds of bananas. It Musa velutina, Musa sikkimensis and Musa ornata. Musa velutina and Musa ornata grow small puppies. The biggest kind it Musa sikkimensis, it reaches in height of 4,5 meters. But still never blossomed. I hope it will soon let out the first flower. I have suggested them to make a collection more and have transferred following kinds in a garden:
Musa Violacea
Musa acuminata
Musa basjoo Sieb.et Zucc
Musa Dwarf Cavendish
Ensete superbum
Musella lasiocarpa
And as a bamboo:
Bambusa arundinacea
Dendrocalamus membranaceus
Dendrokalamus asper
Phyllostachys heteroclada

Hi Rauls, nice pictures and lets hope that your musas will grow well in the greenhouse!!
are your summers to cold to grow musas outside?

Re: Irkutsk botanical garden.

Yes, at us a climate in Siberia very cool. In the summer, the temperature can lower to 0 degrees at night, can be and frosts. For a banana it does not approach to grow up it in the street. But in a greenhouse grow perfectly.:0490:

Raules -you do a fantastic job growing the variety of tender plants that you do, and under such difficult conditions. Hats off to you!!!!

Great idea to donate so many plants to the Irkutsk botanical gardens - leaves so much more room for the new plants when the seeds germinate!!

Good luck with the new arrivals
Cassie

Re: Irkutsk botanical garden.

Climate at us cold, but the local flora is very rich. Many different trees and plants. At us such trees as a pine, a fur-tree, a fir, a cedar, a bird cherry, a birch, an aspen and many other things grow. The big variety of colors. The nature is very beautiful, not looking at a cold climate. Here two photos of Eastern Siberia:

And tropical plants can be grown up only in a greenhouse. It is not a pity to me, that I have given the majority of the bananas to a botanical garden, I on the contrary only am glad to it. In an apartment they have not enough place, and there they will show the present growth, and then and flowering. I shall often visit them and to observe of their growth, development and to help it. Photo I shall place at a forum. At home I have left such kinds of bananas. It Musa sikkimensis and Musa basjoo Sieb.et Zucc. And as the unknown superdwarf and suckers Musa Dwarf Cavendish. They will grow beside with me. Thanks you for understanding. All the best. :bananas_b

Re: Irkutsk botanical garden.

your pics of siberia are lovely! it looks like our pacific north west. and it would hurt my feelings to have grown all the nanas you have and then have to part with them. however, sending them to the botanical gardens is a way to share them with other people. and i think thats a great idea, and a great sacrafice.

Plants in a garden grow well. Here a photo. Especially well feels Musa Dwarf Cavendish. It had puppies. As there is also a result from seeds. Grow: Ensete ventricosum, Ensete Glaucum, Musa Itinerans. I expect other shoots. The banana collection still young, but will be soon more adult.

Young banana collection.
