Impossible
I had a banana split at the base and leaves were growing out of the side.
I cut the tall one down and just let the leaves grown. It looks like it is going to bloom. I doubt I will get bananas but this would be the first bloom I have had. Hopefully someone could tell me what kind of banana tree I have. Does anyone think this might be a bloom? Thanks Paula |

Re: Impossible
Great job getting a bloom in this environment Paula. Don't know what variety but don't give up hope on getting a few bananas out of it. Since we haven't had a summer maybe this constant weather will last a few extra month's and you'll get lucky.

Re: Impossible
Pack the P-stem with plenty of fresh stable sweeps containing horse manure to provide warmth for your banana plant and it will be much happier and more productive.

Re: Impossible
That certainly is a bloom and it should still be able to produce bananas.

Re: Impossible
Paula I've never tried 100% fresh, hot horse manure, so from experience I can't answer that question. I'd hate to learn that your banana plant get cooked. I get very limited quantities of fresh, hot horse manure. When I do, I use it to make manure tea. Perhaps other more experienced readers will field that question. In the meantime I'll experiment with 100% fresh, hot horse manure on some spare DC plants. Thanks for asking.

Re: Impossible
At this stage, horse manure is not going to do much unless you apply about 25 lbs of dry composted material and then cover it with mulch. There isn't enough room in that planter!

Re: Impossible
Wow...that's very intriguing! I've never heard of anything like that (though I'm sure it's happened before somewhere). Best of luck with it! Keep us posted.

Re: Impossible
Richard, It isn't in a pot , it is the ground by cement that is around the pool.
The other side has dirt you can't see in the pic. But I put a bag of manure compost mix around it and put mulch on top. Thanks I hope it does well. Do you know how long it should take to bloom ? Paula |

Re: Impossible
Probably won't get much fruit. The more leaves the better, of course. I've cut down hurricane damaged plants and they out out one leaf and then bloomed. Always goofy.
Who knows though. They might be tiny but they still might be good to eat too. |

Re: Impossible
I'd plan on staking/propping it as well if I were you. The way it came out the side of the pstem will make it weaker.

Re: Impossible
That's called "choking"... when the flower & leaves come out the side & not the top. I read that Raja Puri are prone to this so maybe a R Puri? More pics please!

Re: Impossible
I'll second the RP, as the slender, tall p-stem looks similar to that of the RP I recently planted. None of my other banana plants have such a slender p-stem.
