To help us newbies... Please answer these questions.

If you could only have one variety, what would you plant?

If you could only have two varieties, what would you plant?

If you could only have three varieties, what would you plant?

I'm new to this too, but based on what I grow now and what I've heard, I'd probably decide this:

Pisang Ceylon (love the colors, supposedly among the best tasting bananas, and no BSV on top of that!)

Pisang Ceylon, Ice Cream Awak (I think I have this already, nice vigorous plant that makes great fruit, and lots of it)

Pisang Ceylon, Ice Cream Awak, real Ice Cream (I've always wanted to get my hands on the real Ice Cream banana...)

I would have put Gros Michel 'Cocos' for the third one, but since I'm new to this and because of my climate it's probably not worth trying in my area. If you live in the tropics, go for it.

Dwarf Brazillian-easy, quick, delicious. Never get tired of eating them daily.
A'e a'e-for its beauty
Dwarf Namwah-delicious and quite different tasting than our Hawaiian Apple

Although there are about 25 varieties I'm growing which I've yet to actually taste, so my list could certainly change. Keep us posted on what you choose to plant. At least here on the Big Island, there are maybe 10 varieties that are easy to find at nurseries.

Misi Luki, probably AKA Pisang Raja, Namwah-like fruit. 50# bunches.

Pisang Ceylon / Mysore / Poovan are tasty bananas, but smaller fruit and bunches and skinny, wind-affected trunks.

I can't believe you guys keep pushing Saba - ok - they are statuesque and fruit heavily, but for flavour there are so many better alternatives. Now I am restricted with what I can obtain on my island, but Saba would not be on my list! Just saying....

The Misi Luki in the US isn't AKA "Pisang Raja", it is "Pisang Awak". Pisang Raja is yet a different beast.

1. Hua Moa
2. Hua Moa, Mysore
3. Hua Moa, Mysore, Goldfinger

I am a big fan of Hua Moa. I've figured out when to use it for the various plantain recipes that I cook on a regular basis.

Mysore is the best small banana that I have tasted, Nam Wah is good but I'd rather have a mysore. Mysore also doesn't have problems with Panama disease.

Goldfinger is a great variety, it taste great, and it's resistant to disease.

No question about that. I'm glad I have 5 of them, sold under 3 different names.
