Hi, i just came back from Spain.

I bring back a pup of banana tree wich grows well here and produces edible bananas. The matter is that no one could telle me wich variety it is.

I think about Orinoco, but i'm not specialist.

Maybe some of you could tell me.

I do not grow Orinocco myself, but from what I have seen in photos, your inflorescence, fruit and bunch size certainly fit the Orinocco description.

Hi there. I'm not expert either but this reminds me an Orinoco too.

However, this may be some variant or mutation of Orinoco. Plants which remind very closely what is called "Orinoco" in the USA, seems to be pretty widespread in the hotter areas of mediterranean basin which were islamic. Here in Italy we have a clone which somehow seems to resemble an Orinoco and grows mainly in Sicily which is called "Comune di Sicilia". I would suggest you to avoid calling it a downright Orinoco, because this wild plant may differ from USA/micropropagated Orinoco for some unobvious key feature and keeping it distinct (expecially if it is a wild plant from spain) can be important. Maybe it is more (or less) cold resistant, or maybe it more resistant/suscetible at some disease.
So best advice can be "treat it like an Orinoco and call it <>".

Thank you all,

This banana tree is very drought resistant, because where i took it, there was no watering system and nothing else but Phoenix dactylifera was growing around.

I hope he will resist to the Normandie moisture...

Someone on a the french site "fous de palmiers" told me that it could be a musa pisang jari buaya.

What do you think of it ?

Exactly 2 weeks after poting the sucker in Normandie, i have taken some pictures today of a new leaf comming.

I'm not an expert but i think that assuming that a random banana (in a zone were some Orinoco-like are well cultivated and widespread) is something completely exotic and rare like a pisang jari buaya, it something like assuming that any moving light you see in the sky at night is an UFO. It might be, but actually, most of the are simply airplanes.

You have a nice plant! It's safe to assume that' an Orinoco-like type.

For sure it's not a pisang jari buaya....

It would be my spanish Orinoco, which is called Topocho or Buro platanera in spain.

My spanish Orinoco is still growing prety fast unless the sad weather we have for two weeks.

The leaves are a bit yellow and malformed.

I imagine that the leaves would become normal soon.

He's looking better everyday. I gave him some manure last week and i think that he likes it.

I have not the same succes with my veinte cohol. In five days he doesn't really show signs of growing.

Sure thing! And glad to hear about the manure; what was the method of application and ratio to water? I found a struggling containered banana on my parent's pool patio and I'm going to try and nurse it back to health and repot into something with more growing space. I do have some Black Cow Manure on hand so if that would be okay fert then awesome.

Sorry to hear that the veinte cohol hasn't picked up, could it be your local recent weather? I think I read in another thread on here that they are not very cold tolerant.

What's your future game plan for those bananas; going to keep them in pots? I'm always curious to see if the dream of fruiting bananas in containers is indeed achievable, would save me so much time and effort than trying to deal with my abysmal dirt (can't even call it soil) in my backyard.

I don't know how to use cow manure. I have bought a mix of horse manure and see weed, wich is called "Or Brun", that means Brown Gold.

I use it as repoting medium for 1/3 and 2/3 of classic compost.

I have read here that some of us are using cow manure, but i don't remember the threads.

Okay; there's a horse farm near where my mother works so I could pick up some from there in place of the cow manure if needed. It would just be fresher :)

My spanish orinoco realy likes Normandie !

He grows twice faster than my in ground basjoos !

I think that he will be huge at the end of the summer.
