As mentioned before, I unfortunately get frost here for a few early morning hrs in the winter and have to protect my plants somehow.
Is the taste and yield of CA Gold worth it to grow in SD? I like my Namwah and will have to report on the taste of the "real deal" Blue Java hopefully soon.

I will keep the CA. Gold because of the small size mainly. I'm 95% certain there are better tasting bananas than CG.

Tony, the fruit she's got on her Blue Java is about 3/4 the size you'd get with a spring flowering that matures by August at your place. We're having an Indian Summer here in San Diego so in December we should visit the plant in person to see if the bunch should be hung in the garage or stay on the plant until April-May. In either case when the fruit is ripe it should be a good representation of how Blue Java grown in San Diego tastes. I'm looking forward to it. Also if that individual plant fairs well over her winter (zone 9b) then we should help her market it the pups as "California Blue".

Haha, great idea.
I would definitely share some fruits with both of you for the ultimate SD Blue Java taste test.
There are three bunches right now: #1 from July 5th, #2 from Sept and #3 from October. So we will see, my guess is that at least #2 and #3 have to be bagged over the winter. Maybe we all will prefer the Namwah fruits of my other mat over the Blue Java if Rob and Dan are right.

I have some Blue Java pups that really should be separated, but I might be better off waiting till spring now.

Are we talking about the real deal, or the renamed plants grown by LaVerne for nurseries and "big box" stores?

Who knows, maybe grown elsewhere they're better than in Hawaii. Manzano elsewhere are much loved, but in Hawaii they're generally chalky and astringent unless nearly rotting.

My Blue Java is from Encanto Farms, so I believe it is real.
