Anybody else freakin out about this ice storm passing through? After last year, I'm a little worried. This is day one of four and the limbs are droopin and people are already loosin power! If I loose power very long I'm afraid I'll lose everything in the greenhouse. Just wonderin. I'll keep pearin out the window in hopes it will stop.

Re: Ice!!!!!!
do you have any tarp blankets like movers use? you could use those in the greenhouse and make like t-p or tent for your nanas. it might just be a little protection if your electricity goes out. i guess any blanket would work.

Re: Ice!!!!!!
Looks like your getting it worse than us. We are getting a freezing mist, but it ends up more as ice pellets. Monday looks like we will get a break, but Tuesday isn't looking good

Re: Ice!!!!!!
First thing I would do is open the door to your house and turn up the furnace...unless you have electric heat...
Freezing rain coating your GH will, in effect, form an insulating blanket, unless it melts, then all bets are off. Put some water in the greenhouse. Lots of it!! Fill up every cooler, bucket, storage container, and old milk jug you can find and spread them around inside the GH. It will keep the temps up as it will take longer for the GH (and water) to get to the freezing point. It will also protect the corms in containers if put around the containers. I have been collecting old milk jugs to line my GH back wall just for this reason. I'll put shelves for them to sit on and I will not have to go the heater route. Of course I don't have to deal with extended freezes out here... You might also want to try one of the catylytic propane heaters you can get from you local Lowe's or Home Despot. It clamps to the top of the propane tank and will keep a 10x12' greenhouse above 50 degrees with no problems and might push the temps higher. My local HD is selling propane refills for under 17 bucks. Add a small battery powered fan like they sell for RV's that are powered by a 12 volt battery, running on low for circulation to eliminate the coldest spots. If you don't have a lot of extra GH space, use a propane powered turkey fryer full of water. I brew beer on a propane fired turkey fryer base that holds a 15.5 gallon beer keg with the top cut out as my brew kettle. Bring the water to a boil in the greenhouse every evening and then just shut off the propane burner and walk away. Heck, just the heating rpocess will warm up the GH, but the hot water will keep a greenhouse warm all night. Bring it to a boil every night til your power comes back up. Heck, It might just get you into homebrewing... The sun will help you alot thru the day. Leave the door open to let the GH air out for about 5-15 minutes during the day to drop the CO2 concentration if it worries you or you like to tend the bananas and will spend some time out there, but the plants will do fine with elevated CO2 (3-5X as much as in the atmoshere) and actually grow faster... Just remember that CO2 sinks and will be in higher concentration at the floor. The circulation fan will help keep it more even up by the leaves. You don't need to try to keep the temp up to 70, just above freezing and preferably above 50 degrees will do it til the emergency is over and you can resume your electric heater. Hope some of this helps someone...good luck.... Jeff P.s. If your power is already out, then I don't think you'll get this message...

Re: Ice!!!!!!
We have already lost one good size limb and some smaller ones. I’m sure more will follow. The forecast is not looking good for us. After the ice storm we had last year this one is really making me nervous! Thankfully we have wood heat so if we loose power at least we won’t freeze.

Re: Ice!!!!!!
Thanx for all the help and support everyone! All right so far but more is just starting up. I can just stand outside and listen to the tree's crash one after another, how sad. I already called into work as it's a 30 mile trip and bought a 6pack for the evening. I just informed my nervous wife that the Siam is coming with us. It won't be lost even if I have to cuddle with it to keep it warm. She just laughs at me. James hang in there bud, I know your getting hit too. Hopefully your not one of the 40,000 w/out power. Maybe the temps will be warmer tomorrow and some of this will melt off. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.-Nate

Re: Ice!!!!!!
I know this isn't very helpful for right now, but if you can't afford a generator (best option), then at least get a kerosene heater and some kerosene and have it designated for the greenhouse, and ready all winter. You might get a little leaf damage from the fumes on some sensitive plants like poinsettias, plumerias, but I can keep my 20x20 above freezing with one of those big round ones.

Re: Ice!!!!!!
Woke up last night around 4 with no power. Me and the family cuddled up till the sun came up (21 degrees). Then I got the propane heater goin in the house and brought all the plants in. Around 10 the power came on "thank god" and we thought we were fine. My parents came over to shower and hang out for a while, theirs had been out for 24hrs already. Left the plants in just to be safe and sure enough, at 1 it went out again. A giant limb nailed the wire. Finally got it back around 6 and hopefully it will stay on. Hope everyone else who got hit is O.K. there are still a LOT of people without power.

Re: Ice!!!!!!
Good luck guys - we just have a big storm coming through tomorrow but it won't be cold - just wet and windy!! And power outages are a daily happening but without the chill factor......
