I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
I went out to water this evening and just happened to look up at my first Ice Cream. Looks like a flag, but don't want to get too excited until I know for sure. Although I did call my husband at work, and my best friend. You'd think I was having a baby. LOL!

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
Though I have never sprouted a baby from my loins, he he, i'm sure the excitement of finding out your banana is going to fruit is comparable to finding out your pregnant when your as big a banana nut as we are!

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
I took some pics this evening, and will go out in the morning and take some more. I hope she is not just tricking me with some smaller, different looking leaf. :06:
The temps are really noticably cooler this evening. Hoping this will help and not hinder the "maybe" flower! BTW, you can easily tell who your REAL friends are by how they react to your enthusiasm towards your banana plants. LOL!!! |

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
I am so jealous! My Ice Cream is out my back window, Im looking at it as I speak, growing tall and wonderful. Each leaf that pokes out the top is scrutinized to see if it could POSSIBLY be a flag leaf....post some pics so I can live vicariously thru you!

Alright, so just that you all know that I don't know anything. What exactly might a flag leaf look like?

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
As I pulled in my driveway this morning I noticed one of my Namwa's ( I think that's what they are) has a flower and another one has a flag leaf. This means that I will for sure have at least 8 bunches this year, although I do expect at least 3 more before winter hits. Guess I better start making moonshine!
As it stands now I'll for sure have 3 bunches of Apples, 1 Jamaican Red, 1 Dwarf Brazillian? ( I think) , and 3 Namwas. I'm hoping for two more reds and at least one Ice Cream before winter, and if we have a mild winter I may see a flag from my Pisang Klotek about mid winter. So what the dealio Anna? You got a flag or no? |

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
Now I think this is a smaller leaf "announcing" the Flag. There is definitely something going on here!
I posted two pics in my gallery. It is growing quickly. I must have gone out there at least, five times today to check. :-) More pics tomorrow... |

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
Thanks Frank! But I'm not sure that it looks much different than any of the other leaves. Is it because you've been getting big leaves and then all of a sudden you get a small one? Is that a flag leaf?
Anna, if I had a flower coming out of any of my bananas, I'd be telling everyone in sight. And for sure, I'd make a mental list of those who said Wonderful! and those who said uh-huh.

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
Congrats Anna,
Neat feeling huh? A Flag leaf is just a real short leaf and usually pretty thick. I starts opening at about 2 ft from the pseudostem. Once you see one or two, you will know exactly what we mean. I had an almost BETTER surprise yesterday while walking around checking out stuff after all these recent FL rains. Pups are cool, flag leafs are cool, BUT 2 new shoots about 3 inches tall on my Bambusa Lako (black clumping tropical bamboo) is REALLY exciting. Terry |

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
I have also found that the flag leafs tend to be sort of flat at the end, more like a paddle.

It's about twice the girth of the other shoots. This one is aiming high! Congrats on your TWO!

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
Do you guys have a good source for your black bamboo? I have been to and bought from Bamboo Headquarters in Vista Ca. and the place is awesome! They have a website too.

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
The interesting thing about the Ice Cream, I think, is that I didn't notice the Flag because I've only had the Orinoco's bloom. Since the Flag and bloom are so high up, it's very easy to see. The Ice Cream has pups that were hiding the Flag from me. :-)
Mitchel - can we grow that black bamboo out here? Sounds very interesting! |

Re: I think one of my Ice Cream's has a Flag!
This is tropical bamboo and will not take any cold weather like most of the temperate bamboo will. But the temperate are runners and the tropical are clumpers.
I got mine from a local grower who sells on the web (also e-bay) under www.tropicalbamboo.com. Lots of nice pics and descriptions. Lako isn't cheap. I paid more for this than what Ae-Ae go for. Congrats Jarred on your lako shoot. This make 4 shoots on mine since the first of the year. I'm thrilled with that. These new ones are also a lot thicker, about the diameter of my thumb. It took about a year for it to get settled in again. Terry |

I was driving around my neighborhood the other day and came across a nursery mixed in with some houses back in the countryside that was set back a bit, but I could see they had a huge stockpile of tons of kinds of boos. There was a sign on the fence, Bamboo Unlimited It looked like they had a few kinds of black bamboo, one nice one was lining their driveway. On page 3 of this pdf is their listing. http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/plan...orts/b_nsy.pdf I've used this pdf series to find other folks, and visit them too. Sometimes you can match up an ebay seller name with a co. name. Looks like there's a few listed now on ebay, though. Starting at $25! I've never seen them that low.. looks like a deal. http://search.ebay.com/lako%20bambusa
