I have a Red banana pup now
Thanks to this forum and after meeting Hydroid I have been combing Bermuda for different varieties of bananas. I even advertised on a local website. So far people have been offering me Manzanos but I already have those. It is amazing how many different names people give them...fig,strawberry,Apple, plantain. So today I took possession of a nice 24 inch red banana sword pup. The owner referred to it as a Cuban Red so I may have to wait a year or two before it produces fruit.
On my routes around Bermuda I noticed that almost every other house has banana trees, mostly Dwarf Cavendish but I am on a quest for the rarer varieties. So I have contacted a local farmer who is going to give me a Grande Nain. Has anybody heard of a red banana that look like a Manzano? I have a lead on one of those too! Re: I have a Red banana pup now
Hey Bermy, congrats on the red banana, those were the first ones I've ever seen in person, you'll have fun showing them off. I enjoyed my visit with you and family while in Bermuda, sure wish I could have brought some of those naners back to Alabama, he he. I will be adding a dwarf cavendish to my collection. I think they might fruit here in my climate if I play my cards right. Thanks

Re: I have a Red banana pup now
Hey Bo
I actually put an ad on Emoo for banana suckers and when I was checking out someone's Manzanos noticed the red in his neighbors yard. So asked for the neighbors name and took it from there. I also spoke to a local farmer and he is going to give me a Gran Nain which is larger than the DCs I have and produces bigger bunches and great tasting bananas. I also got a lead on a red that is like a manzano in size and shape so not as long as a Jamaican red. Do you know what it is? James |
