I guess I should just be content with some success but this just irks me! Having lost all my big plants because they got too cold in dormant storage this past winter I didn't have any big hopes of the smaller plants doing much at all this year which would have been fine....
A little over a week ago an Indian woman who seems to visit once a year showed up asking for some leaves for some sort of traditional celebration where they serve food on banana leaves and I discovered this on my Ca. gold plant I got from Brent ( bananaman88) a few years ago:

I should have just been happy for the success but being kind of spoiled I'm just pretty angry that it had to flower now and at this time of year there's just no chance for me to save it.... plus it had been cold for the last few weeks.

This week has been warm and more importantly the nights have been warm as well. Upper 60's for the overnight low. It's fairly hot and humid here this week and all of a sudden it started growing again:





I guess I'll just see how big it will get over the next few weeks and then have a banana flower salad and be happy with that....

I have a theory now that after cutting the mother plant and leaving the full corm that the next pup will flower faster... at least that's proven true with the Velutina...( Dasycarpa.. whatever) so hopefully this theory will be hold up if this plant flowers earlier next year. The biggest pup is almost 6' tall and I guess I'll just overwinter that and hope for the best.

Trying to stay positive and count my blessings having a banana flower up here in the north at all but........ I keep thinking why couldn't this have happened in May?

I feel your pain. That would be like me getting a flower in mid November.

How much of the flower can you eat?

I suppose I should have asked what parts of the flower/bud can you eat as I guess you could eat the whole thing!

I also hate when that kind of thing happens to my plants! Right now my sky glory vine is making buds which means that it might not make good blooms before frost (Im not sure how much heat, if any, that the flowers need to develop). I have 4 plumeria blooms coming, one of them from my rare variegated plumeria, so I am going to give that a ton of sun and heat indoors and hope for the best.
Sometimes the growing season is just a week or 2 too long because it starts setting things into bloom that wont grow properly without the summer heat.
The joys of Fall I guess!

Cool to see that it flowered for you, Bob but not so cool on the timing. I had 5 of my bananas flower last year and only one of them was early enough to get good fruit (the Cal. Gold). By the way, my Cal. Gold threw a bud about a month ago, which is a little late for me, even here in Houston. It only has about 25-30 fingers on it, which I attribute to our record drought in the state this year. None of my other bananas (other than just ornamental types) have fruited this year, though I wouldn't be surprised at all if my Orinoco and Dw. Brazilian don't throw late buds again this year.
