I got my Variegated Florida!
I bought a Variegated Florida! After chatting with several people and doing research online comparing the differences between Ae Ae and Variegated Florida I decided to buy both. I'm hoping I can keep one of these alive to pup and fruit. I created a thread covering my Ae Ae here
I got my AeAe! and I plan on documenting my success or failure with my Variegated Florida here. After trying to buy a plant from Ty or Keith I had to go to Ebay. To put it lightly I feel ripped off and I'm not happy at all with the plant I received. The listing said that the plant was going to be in a one gallon pot and it would be 1-2' high. That part was true. The part I wasn't happy about was that the listing showed a plant with three leaves and said it was a "FULLY ESTABLISHED ROOTED- BANANA". What I received was a pup freshly removed from the mother plant that had only one full size leaf and one small leaf. I wasn't happy. After emailing the seller he agreed to take the plant back and that he would pay for return shipping. But after looking online I don't have a lot of options to replace this plant so I decided to keep it. I should have known better. Don't buy off Ebay if you can buy from sellers here on the forum. Here is the picture from the Ebay listing. Here is what I received. I'll keep you guys posted as to how this plant does. Bill |

I'd expect Keith would have the quickest turn around time since he's in fully tropical territory, but even that, it wouldn't be surprising if demand outstrips the current supply. |

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
Your florida should be fine. The leaves look like they have more light green instead of straight white strips like my Ae Ae and should take sun easier. Water well and fertilize and post if it fruits. Mighty curious about these myself. Had to order a plant from Thailand that got lost by usps so it could definitely be worse. That banana did survive with a little TLC and now looks happy with plenty of leaves.

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
Good to hear that the Variegated Florida is a tough variety. I guess I should be happy I got the right variety! I just don't like being told I'm buying one thing and then receive something less.
Duanuh, Keith is selling Variegated Florida on Ebay right now. He sell on there as banana heaven. He has great prices. He wasn't an option for me because he doesn't ship to California. I'm still waiting for my Variegated Florida to do something. It is just sitting their with no visible changes. I'm hoping it is growing some roots and getting ready for a new leaf. Bill |

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
This plant is growing fast! A new leaf with a new cigar roll. It is basically in the same stage it was in the last picture but with one more leaf. So it is growing at a rate of about a new leaf every ten days. It is still in its little one gallon pot. I'm going to up pot it after this heat wave passes in a couple days.

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
Glad to see the Florida is gaining popularity. I've had one for going into it's second year. They are beautiful plants, and fairly Hardy in my opinion. They are slow to propagate. I've had only two options this year, not last year.

Does the Variegated need extra special care besides the sunburn?

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
Not in my experience. Although I have had one flower yet, so maybe not the most qualified to give advice!
The one I have going now I actually had abandoned for a while. It was just a corm and I though it was another variety. I stuck it in the ground behind my lot in just sand where there irrigation system doesn't even reach. I figured it would do anything. Too a few months, but a nice variegated Florida started coming up. I realized my mistake and started watering it. It's doing great now. |

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
My Variegated Florida is doing great! It got knocked over by my kids with a soccer ball. I had to prop it upright and it has been growing fine. It is in a 25 gallon pot and it receives late afternoon sun. It appears to burn less in the white areas then my Ae Ae. It gets a lot of red on the petioles and PS. It's very pretty.

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
I managed to kill my Florida! I had moved and mistook the Florida corm for another variety. I am limited on space, so I thought I would just plant the corm in a field and see what it did, expecting it would not survive. To my horror, it was the Florida out in the field. It did ok for a season, but this summer took it's toll on it without me around to water it regularly. I tried to save the one pup by transplanting the entire corm to a 30 gal grow bag, but it's down back as well. I'm hoping the corm will still produce, but I'm searching for a replacement just the same.

Re: I got my Variegated Florida!
That’s a bummer. I’m hoping mine will survive this winter and then I will plant it in the ground this spring.
