I got four new plants today!

I purchased four new banana plants off of eBay, and received them today. I hadn't bought anything from this seller before so that's always a worry. But the plants look very healthy and are larger than some I've gotten on eBay. I plan on planting them early tomorrow before the heat sets in. If the heat ever goes away, that is. It's 8:40 PST and still in the mid-90's where I live. I'm just wondering about one of them. The seller called it a Florida Sweet and said it can get 20 feet tall. I can't find any info on a banana by that name. Can someone tell me what it's proper name would be?

I haven't heard if it. I imagine they didn't know what it was and just called it that. I have seen those on ebay before and that is what I thought at the time.

Yes, 'Florida Sweet' is not a real name of any cultivar, altough it does say that it is probly a dessert banana, that at leadt eliminates the extremely common Musa 'Orinoco' which probly makes up half of all bananas grown down there.

"probably a dessert banana" means to me that they haven't actually had one fruit yet or they haven't eaten bananas off of it because if they had seems like they would know if it was a dessert banana or not. I imagine you will have to wait until it flowers and you taste a banana to have any idea what it really is.

I got 4 new plants from Ebay last week! They were fairly small(not as small as I thought though) but very well rooted. I am pretty pleased with them. I got Dwarf Orinoco, Dwarf Red, Raji Puri and Manzano(apple). I have lots of seeds started too. Even if I get only one plant from each type of seeds, it will be worth it. They are all in my little greenhouse until they get going and large enough to move outdoors.

Wish I could have greenhouse. There's no more space here, someday, the grass lawn has to go.

Mine is a very, very small homemade greenhouse. Just wood from an old deck and plastic but we made it so it looks nice and you would be surprised at how many things I can stuff in it, lol. This year we are thinking, however about putting some of the hardier bananas in the shed. The shed it much larger, though not heated, but half is enclosed, the other half is open on three sides(hard to describe, I didn't build the thing!) but half is like a real shed and the other is more like a mini car port, open on three sides exept this one has the animal pens built on the open side on the end. Still if we plastic up the two sides(not the pen side) and leave the pen side open we may at least keep the bananas out of the cold. Like I said the more hardier ones anyway. It is a very tall shed too so maybe this will work. Will post a picture of the greenhouse in my album.

Joe,

There is no excuse for still having grass. I haven't mowed in 20 years.

Hello Joe,

I lived in Davis for 10-years. You can grow lots of Nanas there.

Anna, what else did you get? I'm rather new around here and I bought my first bananas a few day ago and they arrived today. I've never had anything other than one that a friend gave me when I was living in Pensacola a couple years ago. I have no idea what it is but I hauled it and all the pups with me from Pensacola to Bayou La Batre when I moved. I planted them along a drainage ditch thinking that would be a good location. Not. They are alive, but that's all. A few weeks ago I dug three or four of them up and put a few in pots and one behind my storage shed. My goodness, did they take off! One that I put in a pot now has too pups. Really, it has been only 4-6 weeks most that I did this.

Anyway, back to the bananas that I ordered. Now don't snicker if I've made a bad purchase, because I have no idea what's good and what's not so good. Anyway, I got Basjoo, California Gold, Dwarf Cavendish, Red Rowe, Super Dwarf Banana and Williams Banana. I was like a kid on Christmas morning when the package arrived today and I've poted them up until I decide where their permenant home will be.

I would like to get a red (leaves) one but I don't know the name of one so I don't know what to search for. I saw one on this site when someone made a post but I didn't make a note of who made the post.
