Re: Hurricane Irma!
So far, it's not so bad here in Palm Bay in central east coast Florida. I woke up to my only banana casualty so far, the Brazilian broke in half. My 2 Namwah are staked (One I did this morning in the pouring rain.) I do not know if it will help or not. Depends a lot on the track of the storm and direction of the wind.
I hope everyone is safe and dry as well as their bananas have steel pseudostems set in concrete for the next 36 hours.

Re: Hurricane Irma!
Glad to hear it Steve. I've been seeing twister warning all day over by Melbourne. East coast seems to be getting it worse with the wind coming off the ocean.
Over here it looks like things are breaking up quickly, might only be Cat 1 by the time it gets to me. Things we sounding sketchy down by Nicolas, for the past few days they were warning about the levee busting. Then late last night or early this morning (I forget which) an official said the level was low enough that there wouldn't be a breach. |

Re: Hurricane Irma!
South (West) Georgia: Winds are picking up; currently 30 mph w/ gust up to 40 mph. Max. wind is predicted at 45/50 mph about 1:00 pm. There is not a lot of rain in area; most is to the East. ... I think Irma is starting to break up and the cold front a few days ago may be the cause. The winds are cold; current temp is about 66 deg F.
So far at 9:30 am, my Nanas, ducks, chickens, and cats are OK. |

Re: Hurricane Irma!
its noon and I am still here. still have power for the moment. lost 4 big black jacks, one snapped it was a little over a foot in diameter. the others uprooted equally as big. missed everything. I am on a sand hill have never seen standing water on this place, but I do now and it looks like it is going to be there for awhile.
most all the bananas are shreded and leaning over but don't think I lost anything. pics to come. well looks like I have a lot more places to plant bananas. hope you in south florida did equally as good. last year 2 days ago today one banana that made it thru the best. me snow banana

Re: Hurricane Irma!
a black jack is a poor quality oak tree that rots easily, prone to fall, not very pretty, etc. but its worth its weight in gold if you have a big hog cooker. it will compete with the taste of some good fresh hickory. least ways I will have lots of ash to feed the naners. if its a cooking banana do you let the coals go out?
the winds first came from the east, the ended up coming from the sw. when they came from the sw they loosened up a big white oak enough it was leaning over the dining room. so yesterday afternoon I brought out ropes and a come along, pulled over and very slowly dropped it. 5 trees. very fortunate it did not fall, very fortunate.
