Huge Hilo Plant Sale
Aloha,
Yesterday and today is the Big Island Association of Nurserymen plant sale in Hilo Hawaii. The sale was held at Edith Kanakaole Stadium with hundreds of plants for sale. I ran into Rob from Kalapana (robguz24) and finally got to meet Bob. We both picked up a variegated dwarf Cavendish in a five gallon pot. They only had two. We also picked up a very dark, almost black anthurium Black Queen from Troy at Novelty Greens. Troy has some really nice plants. In fact, my first AeAe shipped to Santa Barbara was from Troy. Great to see you again Rob!! I also picked up a variegated Hawaiian spier lily, a dark red Heliconia Indica spectabilis, a Stuttgart Canna that I already have but could'nt resist for $5.00, a crispy wave fern for my wife and a bromeliad for my daughter. It was a great day with my family as well! |

Wow, do you guys realize how lucky you are to be able to simply drive somewhere and pick up gems like that? You and the people who get to go to Rare Fruit Council meets/sales. Congrats anyway!

Re: Huge Hilo Plant Sale
Rob and Andrew, do either of you have a small a'ea'e pup yet, one that you would sell to me? I know you both from the forum and trust you. I've been saving a little along the way and have enough, I think, to pay you for one. PM me if you do. Andrew, my eyes went straight to the plumeria in one of your photos. Did they have lots of those for sale?
Thanks to both of you for posting the pics. |
Re: Huge Hilo Plant Sale
Hi Terry,
I'm sorry but I wouldn't ever mail a pup outside of Hawaii. We have Panama Disease here, along with BBTV, and I would not want to risk being responsible for spreading that to the mainland. Some of my A'ea'e plants have gotten some problem that causes rotting and splitting, though I haven't ruled out over fertilization or a localized problem. One pup I removed and replanted (actually a water sucker) did not show the same problems in it's new home in another virgin part of the yard. |

Re: Huge Hilo Plant Sale
It spreads around here because of growers that are ignorant of the symptoms, and when you point it out to them, they either are too ignorant or too lazy to dispose of the plant the right way.
Spray (I prefer horticultural soap), wait 2 or 3 days and spray again. Chop the buggar down bag it up, dig up the corm and any pups, and kill any nanners within 4 ft, too. |
Re: Huge Hilo Plant Sale
Died without producing a single keiki. Was in a bad spot, too shaded and was mostly growing in base coarse (the grey rock in the pics). It got to about 5' and that was it.

Thanks for the update.
Magilla hasn't posted for awhile, any idea how that plant fared. Quote:
