Default How to winterize this palm

Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I need to plan already now for winter.
I have a foxtail palm and it is quite tall now. I have grown over a foot since last year so I am afraid to cut the top like I did last year to make it fit int he garage. It also has a large pot so it is even hight than before.
I live in Dallas so any advice on what to do with it to make it survive the winter?
I love this palm but it is not hardy at all....!

Any advice?

Thanks

Drive it 5 hours to my place? Lol

It's funny Tyler is about the cutoff for palms. They wrap them in Tyler. South of Tyler you see some hardy ones. Where I am all sorts survive with no protection. We even have huge date palms around. All except the very tropical ones like lipstick, etc.

Maybe if you teepee some poles and wrap with a clear plastic or pallet wrap. Throw a chicken lamp with a heat lamp or even 60 watt bulb. Think that would work? Easy to do.

First off, beautiful tree.
This story does not have a happy ending unfortunately. Foxtails are fast growing palms, and even if you can salvage it for another winter or 2, the writing is on the wall. To your question, as others have said, you can make a green house around it with light bulbs and it should make it another year or 2 before it's just not worth it.

If you have a garage I'd drag it in there and just lay it on its side. It won't grow much over the winter so the shape won't be messed up. I'd probably wrap the trunk just to insulate for those times that you open the garage...maybe put a few LED bulbs near the crown for light to keep the thing photosynthesising a bit. A friend of mine overwintered a queen palm for many years this way.

What about outdoors, under frost cloth and with light inside to keep the temp from freezing?
Still lying down though since it is too high to cover upright.

It’s going to freeze there big time. It’s probably too late but I’ve seen a commercial plant outfit wrap with a couple layers of insulation and wrap Wk plastic. Been doing it for years with no problems. Wrapping some incandescent Christmas lights is a good idea.

I have tried my frost last cloth idea with Christmas lights that are quite warm inside around the stem and also a net around the leaves and the pot. It is lying horizontal and covered in first cloth all around. The cold is just tonight it will go down to 28 or maybe a degree lower.
Hopefully I can build something better having it strand up so I don’t have to lay it down every time there is a frost.

If this doesn’t work for 28 degrees then a hard freeze will kill it since now I can no longer put it in the garage due to size. Will let you know how it goes.
