So, what is the best way to attempt to overwinter this plant? My goal is NOT to have massive growth indoors but rather just keep it alive so it has the potential to fruit next year outside.

Should I cut the leaves back to a reasonable size and keep the pstem height at 3', or should I cut the pstem all the way back to ground level and let it grow up from the corm?

Any ideas or suggestions? I know this isn't ideal but perhaps I can keep it large enough in spring time that it will fruit outdoors next year.

First , Welcome to the Jungle,

You did not mention your grow zone and location.?

I know what you mean when a plant is small and has a big footprint does cause some space issues when you bring the plant inside.

For me, I will cut the leaf in half on some of my taller plants to make them fit in the area better.
Or raise the plant on a table/stand so the leaves are more on the ceiling and out of the way.
.
If you cut the stem the plant will still want to grow some more putting you back n the same situation in a few months or the stress could just kill your vc over the winter months.

There are a few good threads on the forum which discuss bringing them indoors which might help.
Also there are many Youtube videos which are like tutorials which you might takeaway some good ideas.

Is it currently in a pot or in the ground?

If transplanting it into a pot, cut all the leaves off besides the top 2-3. then cut those in half-1/4. This will redirect most the energy for rooting instead of trying to keep the leaves alive. I've potted Veinte Cohols side by side while cutting the leaves on one and not cutting the leaves on the other. Cutting the leaves greatly outperformed to other.

Great into! I totally agree and have tested removing the leaves also! It works. With heat, etc humidity is also very low in winter time. So take a spray bottle and mist them every chance you get! Island Brahs VC did better last winter than any I’ve seen over winter. Followed by a very nice flower/bunch he produced that almost made it. He will be eating VC next year! I’m sure if it!!

Thanks, Ty! I always wondered about using a spray bottle for the leaves! I'll pick one up and start on a few cultivars I have potted up to compare any differences.

I also mist my leaves and use a wet paper towel to wipe down the leaves every few weeks. This keeps any spider mite damage limited. This year I seem to be lucky - I sprayed neem oil on the leaves and p-stem when the plant was outside. So far, no mite damage.

I must have done a bad job in potting up the VC because many leaves died after being placed in an air pot. I didn't need to trim any leaves in half but I would have done that if I had the opportunity. Another idea is to bend / tie leaves down so that they are exposed to more window light.

Here are pics of my large VC from just after transplanting and also from yesterday. The plant is actively growing just with natural light from 2 windows.

I am on leaf 17 now, so hopefully it will be ready to flower by mid summer.

Good luck with yours!
