How many different varieties of banana plants are there?
 
Hi! I would like to know just about how many different varieties of banana plants are there? Names would be nice too! Thanks in advance...:2738:

I read somewhere that there is supposed to be over a thousand different types

The wiki has over 400 with a ton of detail & pictures on most

There is no way to actually know, and the number is somewhat philosophical as it depends on what you define as a unique, distinct type. As far as “naturally occurring” edible cultivars considering phenotypic diversity and not just genetic diversity, I estimate around 2,000-4,000 seems reasonable, but if you consider all the various populations of wild bananas and their differences, and then material generated in breeding programs or through tissue culture selection, it would be in the 100,000s or millions easily.
