Default How To Keep My Ae Ae Banana Alive During Winter?

I Bought An AE AE Variegated Banana About Two Or Three Months Ago. I Planted It In A Two Gallon Pot Because I didn't Want To Plant It In The Ground And Have To Dig It Back Up This Winter. They Are Not Cheap. I Brought It Inside Two Days Ago And Put It Next To A Window. Do I Need A Grow Light? And If So What Kind? How Often Should I Water It? Will It Survive In The House? What Should The Temperature And Humidity Be? Thanks For Any Help.

expensive starter plant !!

you will be digging it up next winter or building a temp gh, as this is close to a 14' fruiter and macon is zone 8-?.

but in short you would treat it as you would any other banana plant..

skies the limit, this is a multi million dollar industry.

can it survive in your house , most likely with proper care.

do you need a light, south facing window should do the trick. i've kept some smaller plants in southern kitchen window under fluorescent light.

i would keep the plant on dry side, if you have a corm. if root system still on the dry side. if i can blow dirt then i'll add a little during winter.

my plants grow and fruit in 40ish thru winter and with high humidity, ranging from 50%-80%..

I left mine out last winter, it survived 22F for one night, and pupped (finally) after a few years. I decided not to leave it outdoors though, and I relocated it back into my greenhouse. Its so happy there. It lost th epup, but its growing like a weed. Its put on 2 new leaves in a month

Thank you, Dean! I have a greenhouse that's packed to the gills with a great variety of things. The only bananas I have in there are AeAe, Siam Ruby, and Uranoscopis. Everything else lives quite comfortably out in the yard.

I try to grow plants in as many generas as I can...palms, aroids, bromeliads, heliconias, gingers, orchids, hoyas and tropical flowering trees, to name a few!

Lilith do you ever get seeds from the variegated one ? And if so would you consider sending some to the UK please. I would pay any postage.

I have a small M.Grahamii from seed but I always wanted the variegated one.
Like most of the plants you guys get over there they are just now available here.

I've never noticed flowers, or seeds. The green one sets seeds, but not the variegated ones

Hello everyone,

Well, I went crazy a bought an Ae Ae banana! I hope I can make it grow. Those are very expencive , but I have to try one. They will probably tissue culture them now. Lol if anyone maybe has some advice I sure would appreciate it. I'm kinda nervous about it but have a good greenhouse to overwinter it in. I'm way to impulsive when it come to growing bananas!

Thanks, Jamie

I am already stressing about this- mine is just over a year and about 8 feet tall- I was wondering if they make a blanket or some type of wrap for them

Do what have you done in the past with your other banana plants this should work for your current plant.....you gotta bring it indoors though.
Your plant is not a bit tolerant of cold, wet conditions

Do you have photos of your plant?....
