here is my dwarf cavendish, going on year 2 and a basjoo pup I saved from the mat at my old home. I have another basjoo pup hidden behind the DC Im getting about a new leaf a month but I can tell they are coming faster now. Another week or so and they can probably go outside for good.

Lookin good there Mike. Seein' warmer temps on the horizon here and I can't wait! Farmers Almanac's calling for a warm start in April and I hope it's right!

Hopefully tonight will be the coldest one for a while anyway.

Uncovered my basjoos the other day, not as happy as I would have hoped but these stumps look like they should put out some leaves. Either way pretty sure the roots are alive and will start from pups worst case scenario.

Protection, doesn't look so pretty under the tarp.

Unwrapped, lookin much worse than expected...

Some p-stem was salvaged though...

They took one day early one in winter that went down to -20C and they weren't tucked in too tight yet at that point, which I think it what hurt them so much. Been covering them back up at night a bit because its still getting below freezing for a few hours but hoping that letting the sun warm up the soil for a while each day will get them kickstarted sooner than later.

Also Matt, my first hibiscus flower opened this morning. Any signs of buds on yours yet? Mines really dying to get back outside and fill in some serious foliage again.

Wow, you're leaving those banana stumps uncovered now in Ontario? We just had snow last night and I'm quite a bit further south than you.

No I've been tucking them back in at night with some of the dry leaves and the tarp. Just been trying to warm the soil a bit during the day. Hopefully in a week or 2 ill be able to leave them uncovered for the most part.

Now they really uh well...

They should recover, if it were me, I would cut them off just below where the last green part of the p-stem remains.

Yes I wondered when it would show. as of Jan new shoots started to form on the lower branches. They weren't growing so I trimmed the top branches back now they should take off.

Took my banana plants out for a walk around the yard .:08:
I will take them in at night for it is still too cold.
I also sprayed them for spider mites and other critters.
I had four die back to the corm and they were all Bordelons.
All ptsems showed signs of dehydration from storage.
My tender bananas Reds, small pups and Ensete are still inside.

Yes ....I do not try to grow them,no supplemental light ,minimal water.
All kept in pots that they grew in last year, I will pot up most of them.
They are kept in my basement behind double doors placed up to twenty feet from the windows.
Temperature about 55 degrees ,12 celsius.
The growth that you see is very weak and will snap in the slightest wind, this is normal for me.
I cannot wait till it warms up.:08:

You can buy a banana for like 5-6 dollars. It's not really a 'break the bank' type of plant. Even on a fixed income.

Re: How are everyone's banana plants this winter??

My musa basjoos are starting to push as I removed the protective barrels stuffed with leaves 6 days ago.

I tried protecting them up above 6ft, but they seemed to die back to the 4-5ft range which is still very good as they are firm pillars with lots of energy ready to explode once it warms up.

Here's some more progress on it. We have a deep freeze of 28F tonight, but it shouldn't hurt these guys as they still look like they have a bit of hardiness as long as they aren't completely green, and I wrapped it up in bubble wrap to hopefully save the progress made in the past 2 weeks.

I wish I had not cut back the stem on mine. It the same as yours. I thought the stem was totally done. I've learned my lesson!

Although all the main stems look dead, the pups seem to be growing well!

Re: How are everyone's banana plants this winter??

I'd trim it down to see if anything is viable.. I did that w/ a Veinte Cohol pup and it shot right up after I got done pretty much.. I can say my IC is down to 3' of p-stem versus 7' when it was protected, GF mother didn't like the cold.. I should've left my heat-tape on it. RP is working its way out of a choke.. Orinoco pups are jumping out of the ground since the my head of Nanners are no longer. It just fruited @ the wrong time. My prayinghands pup I planted in the ground is coming up & so is my DB.. So the lil fellows in the ground made it thru. :^)
