How does a banana plant fruit?

1 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone,
Ok so I'm pretty confused by the flowering process. I have nice flower bud that has emerged and is now completely vertical and one bract has opened, but nothing underneath. The second is about to open, but again, looks like there's nothing underneath it. I thought that the fruit was underneath each bract, but in the pictures of ripening fruit, the bracts and bud are below the bunch. Is it normal for the first few bracts to be empty? Thanks!

The first one or two bracts normally don't have anything under them. After that, several of them will have female flowers, which develop into fruits. The amount of them depends on what variety it is and how well it has been cared for. After that, the bracts will open up to reveal male flowers, which will not produce fruit.
