How did your Ae Ae get past the cold weather that we had 3 weeks ago?

I was looking for at least 12 mature plants this coming sumer, that is before the cold weather. It was the longest cold spell that I have ever seen. And one night we had a rain that gave us water as cold as 40f. At the end of the cold spell most of my plants all looked normal and almost without any damage. On the second warm day the damage started to show up. It just seems to be getting worse.

The white areas turned brown early and the the green started to go. These pictures show the new growth on Jan 24 10.
In the past my Ae Ae bananas have gone through 32f and lost all of their leaves. It took a month for growth again. This time only one night got done to 34f.
I had an orchid growing on a tree in the garden for 35 years and it died last week. Its not been a good time for me.
If you want to see more pictures of my Ae Ae bananas go to: Ae Ae bananas

I feel sorry for those babies, but odds are they will do great in spring, since there have been some hurricanes and other misfortunes in your garden's history. I'm a big fan of your Ae Ae freedom and Ae Ae distribution policy (or what it once was - giving pups away).

I remember that long time ago, when I started being crazy into bananas, I foung your website and saw Mediahound's picture with a new Ae Ae naner there, made my heart warm up a little bit. ;)

Don't worry, some of us can't even grow bananas, yet we fight and struggle, some bananas undergo strong frosts, cold rains and other bad weather, yet they somehow manage to survive. It will all end well. Cheer up, pal. :bananas_b :nanadrink:

Nature will find it's proper course of action.

Jordan,

Sorry to see what happened to your Ae-Ae plants. Actually, I'm surprised the don't look worse. Good luck with them this spring.

I took a few pictures about two days before the cold snap. Just got back in town yesterday and took some pictures this morning of the cold damage. All in all, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!

How sad, jnstropic. I'll bet you were just sick.

Hopefully the Ae Ae will be just fine. Could you save a cutting of the orchid? I'd be so sad to lose a plant that old!

Jordan,
We had it tough down here in Miami with mid 30's for a straight week and one of the coldest winters ever. There was a major fish kill also and thousands of fish including Snook were killed. Many manatees have died and so have many plants native to the Everglades.

Your Ae Ae's look like they will be fine and ready to rebound come spring:bananas_b
