Default how close can different varieties be planted>

How much distance should you leave between different varieties of banana plants? I have lots of fence line that I am planting naners along.
Are banana plants in any way harmful to horses?

For backyard gardening someone said 4 feet between rows is OK commercially it is wider.
I plant mine closer because of lack of space. And don't follow me.

I'm kinda new to growing bananas. Just started collecting in May. Aren't they self pollinating? Is there any problem of cross pollination? My current goal is to allow them to form groves. But keep the different varieties seperate. Of course if the wund blows my goals may change!!!

mckoinld

There is no problem with cross pollination. As far as how far apart to plant them I think that depends on how much room you have and how many different bananas you want to grow. If I had the room I would leave 8ft. between plants. As it is I have some as close as 3ft. What is the best spacing I don't know.

I have 6 acres. So planting them 8-10' apart is good. I want to collect everything that will survive the winter in zone 9a. I have horses on about 4 acres. I"m sure one of them will get the opportunity to take a bite out of one eventually. Does any one know if there is any danger to the horse?

I have never observed any animals eat bananas. Perhaps because the sap is bitter. So they don't take seconds whoever try to eat them.

I think Samantha from TN had issues with either horses or cattle reaching over the fence last year and eating her banana leaves, if I remember correctly.

I had a basjoo planted about 2 1/2 feet from the fence line. My horses would eat every leaf they could reach and pull on it to get the others. They went back for seconds and thirds! Didn't do anything to them except having to deal with and irate Momma, and I just did move it yesterday - way far away from the fenceline!

On the second thought I never get too acquainted with horses and cattles. Only regular house pets and carabao (lol). No goats either. Horses and cattles are not breed where I grew up. That's why bananas grew wild and all over the place highways included. And papayas and mangoes. Just like Hawaii.
At least Lonie got his answers right after a few days without any post.
