I’ve had quite a few weird experiences with banana plants lately. First one was when I went over to look at my mekong giant. I wanted to see if it was starting to grow again from being covered over for winter. I noticed that some animal had dug up the ground where the plant was. The really weird part is the corm is gone! Do animals eat corms? Another weird one was my poor little Florida Variegated had died back to the soil line again. Only this time it didn’t grow back. The odd part is that what looked like grass came up out of the hole where the pseudo stem was suppose to be. Before I knew it I tons of the stuff growing in the pot. Has that ever happened to anyone before? Pretty crazy!

I think we'd all love to see some pictures

Something similar happened to a Grand Nain plant I got from Strick, it died back during the winter storm and when it came back it grew about 6-8 tiny suckers in a 6" area so it's growing like a giant clump!

I actually just posted a picture on it, it's the one on the left

Sorry I don’t actually have any pictures! Yeah that is something about your grand nain! They are tons of pups in that clump! Hey at least it’s still alive! I have to b/c that is exactly what happened to my basjoo plants this year! The mother stems froze over the winter and died. So they pushed out tons of pups too! How about that!

OMG! Can you believe it....that it happened yet again! Some weird animal had made a mess out of 2 of my plants yesterday. The animal had dug down deep into the 2 pots. It flung the soil all over my deck and onto my white fence. Not only that but also managed to get a banana corm out of the pot and drug it down off the deck. The animal must have tried to eat it b/c there was a chunk missing. Don’t know why the corm was just left there. Maybe it wanted to come back to get it for a snack later!

I don't of course necessarily know what animals might occur in your area, but considering the ubiquity and resourcefulness of raccoons, that would be my first guess. Good luck with the sleuthing, I hope you work it out.

Raccoon comes to mind also, but possibly a skunk. They love to dig!

If it's a coon, try baiting it with something shiny and see if it gets stolen. An old CD would be perfect. Do you know anyone with a cage trap?

Yes believe it or not I really do have a trap in my cellar! I forget who gave it to us! If I were to trap it I would have someone else take it to the woods and let it go free!

Take it far away to make sure it doesn't come back!!! Don't know about racoons, but squirrels can come back if you don't take them at least six miles away!

Every single wildlife biologist/expert I have listened to on the subject say trapped raccoons should not be relocated for at least 3 reasons:

1) They are very likely to find their way back to their home territory unless taken extremely far away...which doesn't help you

2) If they are removed far enough away, it is extremely likely be plunked into other raccoon's territory and therefore present a threat to it/them; which will invariably lead to territorial disputes and most likely a difficult death for at least one raccoon.

3) If it is relocated to an area far enough away without territorial issues, there is a good chance it will become someone else's problem, and I think most of us wouldn't want anyone to do that to us.

Soooooo, the recommendation as I have always heard it is to dispatch the animal in a humane manner once caught.

I am not the expert, this is just my understanding based on what I have heard/read.....at the very least it is something to think about.

It was a pretty interesting idea about making sure to send the animal far away! However, I never thought of the animal running into trouble after being relocated! Oh, well since there hasn’t been any trouble since the last incident I think I’ll leave well enough alone. Thanks guys for the nice advice!

OMG! I totally missed a picture that I could have shown you guys! Well here’s what the Florida Variegated looked like just before it died back to the soil line for the 3rd time in a row!

Here’s what grew back after the 3rd time! It totally looks like grass!

You’ll have to look past the AeAe. It looks like a couple blades of grass in a pot!

Sweetheart, at some point you may just have to take a deep breath and realize that perhaps your eyes were bigger than your stomach when you started all of this. You may just have to pick a few of your favorites and focus on them.

Can you realistically grow a coconut palm to maturity? Do you really have the room or the resources for all of these plants? I know what you had in mind, but it may be time to maybe consolidate a bit. Just an observation from an oblique angle. Of all of these, what are your absolute die-hard faves? Once you have that sorted out, you can split your efforts between the ones that need babying, and what you want to have growing outdoors.

I'm not trying to be a stick-in-the-mud; just another point of view. Hugs!

Now, if it really is a skunk; they are super easy to catch. Once you know it's not rabid (like, it's not aggressive and still around after a few months), you can call it like a cat and it will come over. They're even more friendly than red foxes. They absolutely LOVE attention; treats and petting. The stories about kids and the funny-looking black and white kitties are spot on. Skunks are probably the most affable members of the weasel family, aside from ferrets. Somewhere, I have a picture of me when I was 9 or 10, with one sitting on my lap.

My uncle (married to my aunt, not biological), was 3/4 Penobscot Indian, and taught me everything I know about skunks and how to interact with them. He'd catch them for people. Not trap them, but actually catch them; literally. In his hands. He'd whistle and talk to them, and they'd come right over. He'd pet them, pick them up and stuff them in a gunny sack. Now you know why I have an affinity for black and white cats.

That's kinda cool. Never thought to call a skunk over. I caught one once in a live trap (trying to catch a feral cat) right before going to work in the morning and did everything I could to prevent it from spraying me (including singing to it while I carried the trap to an easier release spot in my yard). Who'd a thunk I might have been able to pet it.

Didn't spray you, did it? Actually, a better description, is: it didn't dribble onto it's tail and fling it at you. Dogs get sprayed because they get into it's face and act aggressively (also why they get a face full of porcupine quills). Another misunderstood animal. Porcupines are really sweet animals. People don't generally do that. You have to do something either really aggressive or stupid to get sprayed by a skunk or quilled by a porcupine.

Hi ya Snarkinator! Yeah I suppose that you do have a point. I have been a little over my head this year. I can’t believe that you can call a skunk! Just like a cat! Unbelievable! So here’s an idea for a YouTube video! Next time you come across a skunk video yourself calling it over to you! I bet people would get a kick out of that!
