Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase Or NOT? LOL
Hello
Seems like I've gone banana crazy....LOL Stopped by my local Home Depot and found these Cardaba Banana's there so I bought a couple @$11.88 ea. Reading from tag Cold Hardy to 10 degrees. Any help on how to plant and where tag reads part sun...Don't want to over cook it lol if it can't take the heat and humidy of down here in South Louisiana near Lizard Creek. Again any info would be truly appreciated here are a couple of pictures of them. Now they have pups....should I remove them befor planting or wait. This homeboy ain't never done no pup deliveries lol Thanks in advance for your help. Snook

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
Forgot to mention that they are pretty easy to separate while still young like that. You can pull them out of the pot and get a sharp knife or shovel and just cut through the corm. Just try your best to get some corm on each plant. And then you'll have a whole slew of plants before you know it.

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
Good buy, when seperating also get some root on the pup as this will help much to get it started. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
Repotting might be a good idea now so the plant can grow a bit larger and give the pup some time to grow good roots. Watch the plant and check to make sure it isn't getting root bound. Easy to do, just remove the plant from pot and see if the roots are circling around the pot. We are a bit rough with the plant roots but haven't had any severe problems. When repotting we untangle the roots as best as possible and using good compost and other composted tree bark and leaves give them a larger condo to move into(bigger pot). Most of the time they love it and in a very short will start to show their growth. As with life, patience and discipline pays off in hearts. Have fun.

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
The two potted plants in the pictures are not Cardaba bananas. They look like Dwarf Cavendish. Cardaba has closed petioles that are long and those plants have open petioles that are short.

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
The same thing happened to me when I was sold two plants labeled "Ice Cream." They were mislabeled, and instead I have two unidentified plants. It's pretty common for this to happen at big box stores and even some smaller nurseries, and in most cases it's likely not their fault. It's probably a better idea to not buy banana plants from large stores like Home Depot and Lowe's and instead buy them from smaller, more specialized nurseries.

A couple closeups.
Maybe hard to tell in this photo, but the underside of the leaf has a bluish/white color Closeup of petioles |

Re: Home Depot $11.88 Cardaba Purchase
DC has some cold hardiness, but it will suffer through the winter. Even if it dies to the ground, it will probably still come up again in the spring. You could try to overwinter it. The good news is it won't get very tall like the actual Cardaba.
