high color mini
 

Thinking about getting a high color mini. Do they get lots of color on there leaves? Does it do well in full sun?About how tall do they get? :kiteflyingnanergif:

Ive tried them a few times and have had terrible results. In my experience, they were hard to get started and hard to grow, very fussy and easy to upset and died early. The more mature ones Ive seen don't really show that stunning of coloration, they are nice, but if you want color zebrina offers more. The tallest one I saw was about 2ft.

I agree. Really slow and they don't ship well, I guess. 8-12", then kaput. No full sun (edit: although many do and have no problem)! Not a lot of color, maybe some splotches, maybe more, depending...

Here are a couple of pics of mine last summer. It has much darker purple colouring than zebrina, and the underside of the leaves is green. Very dramatic.

Of course mine died indoors this winter, including all pups. Tough one to keep indoors for 6 months in NJ, but in SoCal your winter is far shorter. My guess is it would be ok.

Again, on the right side of the pic. The leaf in the foreground is zebrina.


On the left this time, earlier in the summer, in sunlight showing the green underside of the leaf. Gorgeous purple on the top side, its a shame this one died.


Jarred, mine was fine in full sun all summer, it just made the colour nicer!

Mark, Mine lost all it's color a couple months back. It has been grown in full sun and is thriving! After losing color, I thought maybe it was mislabeled and not really a HCM.



In this picture it is next to a DC. on right for perspective. DC. is 1 month younger than HCM. They look the same except for size. Both plants were 8 inch TC's in 4 inch pots back in October 06.

OK guys, full sun, it is, then! Mine didn't do so well each time I tried.

Just because yours did not like full sun and someone elses did does not by any means insure that one way is correct. Each individual plant will grow different and require different treatment in the many different climates we may be growing them in.

That's certainly true and I thank you for shedding some neutral perspective on it. When researching, one should consider the topic at hand and if in fact what they are reading should be considered the definitive truth of the subject. I was obviously sharing my experience, as were everyone else. This plant needs to be treated "on the safe side" and my recommendation was to keep it safe.

This is what I remember might have been a 'High Color Mini', I know it was something small like that, not an SDC, I don't think it was Truly Tiny either. If pitangadiego sees this he should know, being as it was taken at his house! He said it never got any taller. Also I saw one about the same size at the Harry P. Leu Botanic Gardens in Orlando a few years ago.
