Default Hi from TN

Hi, my name is Mark. I live in east TN. I have been growing subtropical plants including bananas in my yard for 11 years now. I have tried many different kinds to see if they would survive our winters here unprotected. I grow a lot of them from seeds. Everything was going good for me up to four years ago when a unknown illness hit me and I was not able to take care of my plants. I lost a whole lot of them during those couple of real cold winters we had. This is the first year since then that I have felt normal and have started working back on my yard again. Before my illness hit me I had 9 types of bananas growing in the yard in the ground. I only have 4 types to survive since I was not able to take care of them. Musa Basjoo, Musa Sikkimensis Daj Giant, Musa Mekong Giant, and Musa Itinerans. I have several more types from seeds planted.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Hello and welcome,
I have not been sick but I've been trying to grow bananas in the ground for the past 5 years. The only variety I've tried was the cavendish. My problem with this variety is I have not been able to protect it during the winter months. I tried frost clothes, PVC frames, water buckets, and dirt around the trunk to no avail. Last year was the first time that I've seen a bloom and little bananas but all were lost during the cold. I've decided to try potting different varieties and in early spring, plant them in the ground to give them a chance to grow all summer long to see if I can get bananas before freezing. Is there a secret to producing or am I missing something? All advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee

Cavendish is a cold sensitive variety.
