They are showing up all over the place in my hood these days. Kinda like Rose bushes in the 50's-60's. It will get some nice color as it grows larger.

No, it's 6 mos old. When I got it, it was 12in tall. The whole point is that they sold me a very healthy Abyssinian Banana, when what I paid for was the RED var of this plant. It is supposed to have this beautiful RED coloring on the top side of the leaves, kinda like a Black Knight Canna. This one obviously does not.
RED Abyssinian Banana will NOT come true from seeds. It has to be from a TC. |

Yeah, the red would be nice, but it's still a beautiful plant.

Hey,
I read somewhere that ensete are not always true since they are planted from seed. the 'red' is a mutation that can't be guaranteed in seeds even though the 'mother' plant is red.... i don't know that much about them though. I've been looking for one that's like yours (not red) and they're not that popular. i think it's giant abyssinian banana or ensete ventricosum. the red is ensete ventricosum moreli?? |

I was just at a local garden center here in New York, and in the aquatic center they had beautiful plants of ensette maurelli growing in water plantings along with papyrus and other water plants. Nobody knew what the plants were and when asked they said the plants have been thriving in the water ponds for the past month. Has anybody heard of growing these plants with the plants roots almost totally submerged in water?

I have never seen seeds of Maurelii, Montbeliardii or Hiniba for sale. They must flower somewhere in the world.
We have started getting dinky little maureliis in our garden centres this year really cheap $6 for a 8" plant along with Zebrinas and Dwarf Cavs. It has started people selling them on ebay for a few pence more just to try and make a profit.
