HELP...unexpected problem
I thought all was secure. This is my first fruit ever...it is Indian Mysore.
Pseudo stem is still connected but partially broken in two. Should I leave it to draw whatever nutrients it can for a while longer, or should I cut and ripen inside? Since it's my first, I'm not sure if it's too early. I sure don't want to lose my first fruit! The top hands do have the slightest tinge of gold green but not much. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: HELP...unexpected problem
I'd leave it attached; the fingers in the bunch don't look like they've reached the full size yet. Any way to prop it and attempt to make the p-stem less crimped? This happens to my honohono orchids sometimes, and the crimped area slows / stops the flow of liquid inside the stem, and may cause you to lose that part. Propping it will reduce the damage, but sometimes you still lose it.

Re: HELP...unexpected problem
Propping as Yug said would help. Maybe you get some more nutrients/maybe not. The bunch will still mature (turn yellow) in time but the nanners might not grow much larger. I have had leaves that have been broken in a storm and hanging by a 1/3 connection stay green.
Good luck! |

Re: HELP...unexpected problem
Let it be. The more you move it, the more you damage it. If you can find a way to support the weight of the banana bunch similar to hanging them in your garage, go for it.
In the future, the weight of the bunch must be supported above the bunch by supporting the arch of the stem. See http://webebananas.com/bpix/BP952-20.jpg

Re: HELP...unexpected problem
Thanks for all the info,.
Alas, the next day they were turning dark...the stem was actually broken in two and we're in 115 degree heat wave. I brought it inside and hung it up, but it's obvious they are way too immature and not going to improve. Disappointed but lesson learned. I'll do a much better job of securing next time. I have mature blue Javas and others that I hope will be fruiting soon. Thanks, everyone! |
