Help Identifying Banana & Care
Hi everyone!
So glad I stumbled across your site. HELP! :-) I’ve been wanting to purchase a banana plant for several years now. I live in Montreal, Canada (approximately zone 5b). The local town that I live in uses a specific variety of banana for their community planters. They are stunning once growing season is in full swing! Anyway, after a few summers of searching, I recently found what I think is same variety at a local greenhouse. It’s about 3 feet tall at the moment (as seen in photo). I just transplanted plant from its greenhouse pot (about 10”) to its new summer pot which is about 20” in diameter. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but many of the leaves, including new ones that have just unfurled, are TURNING BROWN and in spots are almost transparent. We’re just coming out of a two week heatwave (in the 30’s C / 90’s F), so maybe this is contributing to the problem? I’ve been watering heavily on a daily basis? Plant has full sun for the majority of the day, but starts its day and ends its day in dappled sunlight (partial shade). If Possible, I would appreciate knowing its actual variety and care. Perhaps there’s already a link on your site that can help me with this? Also, will be needing to know the best way to overwinter, but that can be another post down the road. Thanks & glad to be here! Chris aka CanBanDo (short for Canada Banana Do ;-)) |

I googled the variety that you were thinking, and bingo, that’s it! Exactly what we have in our city planters! How often would you fertilize using a soluble fertilizer? Also, no rush, but I found this video on how to overwintering Ensete Maurelli. If you have the time, could you throw in your two cents and let me know if this method in video is the correct way to overwinter or not? Thanks! Stay safe! https://youtu.be/X9KVh_ujBzU |

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
I don't really know anything about Ensete bananas, but with a regular banana, I would fertilize monthly. Or you can use smaller doses every week. You can tell if you are over fertilizing if your leaves are coming out torn. As to the video, that looks like it works , so yes

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
Hi Joe / everyone,
I’ve uploaded a few pics of a new banana leaf unfurling this morning (please see Members Gallery “CanBanDo / Leaf Damage“). As you can see, it’s opening with existing damage. Is this from my overwatering or something else? |

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
It was easy once I gave it a larger pot with Miracle Grow houseplant soil which contains perlite. Also KEY was advice given to me by a couple of fellow members not to overwater. Allow soil to completely dry out to the depth of one inch, then water back in 1” of water. I’m lightly fertilizing every two weeks. Leaves are perfect now!

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
Sorry, somehow I missed this last year. How did the plant fare this winter?

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
Jury is still out. Corm is somewhat soft after dry storing in my garage — not hard like it was when I put it to bed last fall. It’s outside now, so I’ll have a better idea in a few weeks.

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
Well good luck, hopefully it makes it. Mine rotted to the point that I am not sure its salvageable, but I tried anyway. The interesting thing was that it looked like it rotted from the top down. In other words, the bulk of the roots looked healthy, but the upper part of the corm was definitely gone and I stopped cutting before I cut away the entire corm, but I probably could have. Its now in Perlite
Outer leaves a little soft so pulled them off, but hey, there's a nice new leaf coming out, maybe it's OK? But then I noticed the big brown spot at the base, not a good sign. So I pulled the rest of the outer leaf sheaths off and.....oops, not looking promising at all. So then I stripped it down to the corm and roots. Corm not so good but a lot of good looking roots in there. Top of the corm, brownish, soft and spotty After cutting and cleaning as much as I dare potted in straight perlite after soaking in a bleach solution for about 1 hour. I'll keep it dry for a week or so and then keep it lightly moist. Time will tell and of course if it works, I will post an update

Re: Help Identifying Banana & Care
That's funny, I was literally looking at it 15 minutes ago, made the decision to call it and was thinking I needed to post an update on it's demise.
Good lesson learned! Thanks for checking!!
