Help!!! First Online Order
 

Hi all. I ordered some bananas and elephant ears from Florida Hills Nursery last week. Unfortunately, I didn't read the post on them until today. Anyway, this was the first time I have ever ordered plants online. There were not any planting instructions so I treated them as I would any tropicals that I purchase. Putting them outside during the day and bringing them in at night until our night temps. get a little higher. I have been doing this since Thursday. Today I noticed that all of my bananas and my mojito elephant ear look somewhat unhealthy or droopy. I was finally able to find the owners email address to inform them as the website had no contact info. After reading the thread on the nursery, I realized that I have TC plants. I had never heard of this before as I am new to bananas and I made all of my purchases from a local nursery that specialized in tropicals (now closed).

Can someone please advise me on how to handle these plants. I don't want to loose them and I don't know if I will get any help from the nursery.

These almost look stressed from the heat. How warm has it been and have you been putting them in full sun?

I put them in full sun yesterday morning for about 2 hours. It was only about 70 yesterday as well as today. However, it's been a little windy here for a few days. I don't get much sun inside so I thought it would be best to give them some. I am really new to bananas, I just started last year and I lost all of my plants trying to overwinter them. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I've gotten several nanas and a couple of EE's from Florida Hill over the last couple of months. They are very beautiful plants, I've been putting them under metal halide lamps in the garage during the cold nights and now that the days are getting warmer I'm putting them in bright light but not direct sun. They are very tender and need to be acclimated gradually until they "harden" off. Yours
definitely are showing signs of sun burn.

i think this is being caused by over watering or bad drainage.. this cant be because its so hot. its not terribly hot in Georgia yet. im only getting slow growth in the ground by a few cultivars that are in full sun all day. im barely watering any tropical/subtropical plants.

check the moisture of your soil. i would say for now mist the plant with a water bottle if you feel its dry,and do this sparingly for now.

Hi, heres a crazy idea I had and it worked. I have a few grass umbrellas for
my picnic tables. When I first bring mine outdoors I put them under it for filtered sun. Even when young ones are first planted,I stick the umbrellas
in the ground. Believe me this works. Mine turned black they were so affected by the shock of too much sun. Introduce them to sun gradually.

With plants you get in the mail, even if they were previously hardened off, they will go into shock if you put them directly outdoors into full sun. You need to put any plant that you receive in the mail into the full shade in a warm place and protected from the wind for a week or so to acclimate to outdoor conditions. Then after that period of time, put them outdoors into the desired locations. If they're not outdoors in a warm place in full shade, get them into those conditions pronto!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have relocated my plants back to the porch in the shade and I will limit the amount of water they are given & keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again all so much!!! Hopefully my plants will pull through and I can get on with creating a tropical oasis in my backyard!!!
