Help building is being power washed!
Okay live in a apartment and have all my nanners-cactus out on my balcony. They are having a company power wash the outsides of the building. What is used in the spray is bleach.... I have no where to put all my plants. I'm worried about over spray hitting them. If over spray hit them I would figure they would die completely? I hate the fact they are using bleach since its toxic, plus we have a retention pond near by.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
Move all your plants inside during the day they spray, then move them back out. That's the best/only way to ensure nothing bad happens to them.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
Get some painters plastic and cover the whole balcomy. Hopefully it will stop the majority of it.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
A good powerwasher's spray can penetrate right thru any kind of plastic so I go with bring inside that day. Best not to chance it. :^)

Re: Help building is being power washed!
If you know what day they're going to do it and you can't bring them in, then take the day off work and watch to see what happens--if any gets on them, just hose them down and rinse it off. Don't let it stand or dry on them, just wash them off and they'll be fine.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
I think buying a tarp from lows or home depo would be a 2nd best option if you couldn't bring them in. 10x10 is like $7

Re: Help building is being power washed!
Just curious. You say you can't bring them inside. What do you do in the winter? Also, how do you water them?

Re: Help building is being power washed!
We got F-ed over cause they came this am. Wife jumped up and said oh my gosh they are powerwashing now. Never told anyone why they didn't come yesterday or that they were coming today. Blasted the crap out of all my plants as the wind had blown the covers off the plants alittle yesterday, and I removed them cause of the heat. If I knew they were coming today I would have covered them back up. They were still suppose to let everyone know if something changed since they stated a date. Can't bring them in cause of ants, spiders and other bugs would be roaming in the house. Nothing comes inside for the winter cause we live right near the ocean and a huge river. (Zone 8b) everything is cold hardy here or colder. I had to go to the clinic lastnight for stitches so can't walk,so my awesome wife is washing the plants off the best she can with buckets of water. Alot of the cactus are from 15 years ago and have no way to replace them!

Blake- thats right people don't care. Two young guys doing it and they didn't even have the right equipment to do the job. So looks like someone they found in the newspaper with a ad for powerwashing for really cheap.
I use a watering can. Last edited by LilRaverBoi : 08-09-2010 at 09:49 PM. Reason: Consecutive Posts Merged |

Re: Help building is being power washed!
Well so far so good! My Wife dumping water on everything helped, sun never staying out and it poured down rain real hard. Everything seems okay.. If no bug problem, didn't have two cats and two babies then plants could have come inside.. Thanks

Re: Help building is being power washed!
The only possible silver lining- if indeed they had some bleach in the water mixture, your bug problem may be gone.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
They had BLEACH alright! You could smell it coming into the house by the french doors.. I dunno ants are pretty tuff and I think they climb up the building 15feet. Tiny little buggers!

Re: Help building is being power washed!
That's really too bad that they came when you weren't expecting it! I hope everything is alright! Just FYI, for future reference, if you have plants you don't want to bring in due to bug issues, you might be able to take the lid off a large plastic storage container to create a moat with water. It will likely keep most things from traveling too far. I'd elevate the plants with some rocks/bricks to keep them from being uber wet.

Re: Help building is being power washed!
All my nanners are growing like crazy now... Between my wife watering the heck out of them and the past storm we had. I was feeling te soil and it was damp so wasn't watering them. Being so high up in the air its real dry and hot. Being in pots it better to under water then over water anyhow. They all have plastic trays and drainage holes in the pots. Only lived in NC for two years so getting use to how plants react in pots,is alot different then Ohio and they were all in the ground when we had a house there. Thanks everyone!
