Default HD & Lowes - No nanners.

Have read, on here, about the bananas that members pick up at Home Depot and Lowes, so I thought I'd check out our local stores, (We have two HD, and two Lowes here) I went to all of them and found no bananas. They barely had any tropicals; a few overpriced Hibiscus and Mandevillas, and a couple of Philodendron type "house plants". I then thought I'd try my luck, across the bridge, in New Jersey. (I had to plan carefully, and combine as many errands as possible, because of the exorbitant tolls.) I went to another HD, and Wallmart. The results were the same.

Thats not to surprising to me! I lived in Mass and never saw on there either ..
you can order them online from different places or just post in the wanted section here on Bananas org and a member will try to hook you up

I was in Wall Mart yesterday! Saw all kinds of bananas in the weirdest places . That one was $5.95

Just mentioned this. I don't think I have ever bought anything from (plants) from these stores. I am in the nursery busines, and have bought stuff from AgriStarts (and others, like Sunsine Horticulture, AG3, a former part of Agri Starts) almost from their inception

so why not order some DC from agristarts and sell them to a local HD?
problem solved

but seriously
why not ornamentals like veletunia (sp) and just call it a super fast growing annual???

GW- Problem is that HD, et/al do not buy from local growers. They all buy from places like Stacy's (the one name I can think of now) I'm certainly not complaining about not selling to HD/Lowes. I sell plenty to local independent garden centers, and I certainly would not turn down an individual, who came down the walk with money in their fist. My only observation was that the big box stores in this area had a dearth of bananas/tropicals.

Hey Johnny, I'm in lowes weekly. Next time let me know & I will save you
time & gas. I'm less than 10 minutes away from Lowes. I bought 2 orange trees last year and a meyer lemon a few weeks ago. This year no orange at
all. If I ever see banana I will let you know

Raggedy; Surprises me you have come across the Oranges and Lemon in our region. I have owned a DC for over 20 years (TC purchased through a seed company) upon receiving it those years ago I have been on the search for more to buy local, same result over all those years.
I have started all my ornamentals' from seed or purchased TC from reputable sources.
To cut through the short for all us northeaster's it's going to be seldom we come across true tropicals in our area, think about it, go to a big box store or nursery in the southeast or southwest you'll find Palm, Nanners, Yuca, Cacti, Aloes'..... they don't fit our climate so why sell them here, LOL! (some of us know better).
Just keep to the forum there are plenty of people and sources here to obtain top specimens.

Happy Hunting and keep growin : )

Hi, I was able to get orange, tangelo and meyer lemon. I asked the garden ctr manager about more citrus. He said he will look into it. My first Basjoo came from there a few years ago. There is a garden ctr on rt35 Hazlet NJ that sells banana plants. I haven't been there in about two yrs. I will have to check them out again. I bought Thai blk and Ensete Maurelli on ebay. They were very small. Not like previous years. I will keep searching.

Keep checking every week or two; the nursery suppliers tend to bring stuff in waves, even stuff that isn't climate appropriate. Just because they don't have them now, doesn't mean they won't get some. Also talk to the nursery manager at the stores and ask them to ask their supplier if they will be delivering any this year. The big box stores don't actually know what is coming and when, it is all run by the nursery suppliers.

After considering what you said, it seems WalMart was the one buying from semi-locals, but only larger scale. K-Mart too but that can't be big numbers.
I hear HD isn't the most pleasant customer.

Before I start a quest to find something in my truck, I think about how much gas I am going to use then think about shipping charges. Keep in mind too that mail order plants can be fresher than HD or Lowes. Some of the TC banana plant shippers charge less than $10 for shipping. Their selection of course is much larger and they are a good source of advice.

As a side issue the number of wrong tagged fruit trees I have gotten from the box stores is one in four.

I just called my local stores today; HD had them earlier but sold out, and my local lowes is expecting a shipment of Basjoo in quart pots this Friday. I plan to go grab a bunch of them

Hi everyone, Had to bite the bullet today. I went to my local garden ctr and
found a musa acuminata zebrina (blood banana) $50.00. Total height about
30". Only gets 6 to 8 ft. Not thrilled it doesn't get bigger, but that's all they had. I am going to a place called Deerborn to see what they have. They are in Hazlet NJ. As of about 2 yrs ago they carried a lot. BTW I forgot to say
there were three zebrinas in the pot I bought today. I will keep searching.
Raggedy.
