hcm question
 

when a hcm goes to throw a flag, the leaf is shorter and it opens up ...correct? i have a short fat leaf that came up the other day, it has turned brown...is this normal or what? im clueless in sparta. thanks

Some of these short Cavendish types do weird things with their leaves and make "pseudo-flag leaves" when stressed out. Its probably a flower if the plant is healthy and of mature size and age. A picture would be nice, but you'll know soon enough if its flowering or not, theres nothing you can do either way so let us know how it goes.

this is what i ment, it was green then turned brown, its not crispy, its kind of soft. im clueless. was this suppossed to be a flag? the leaf is way shorter then the others.

this is the other pic of one of the leaves, the lamp was to close to this one. its not crispy either its soft.

I think that it may have briefly experienced low temperatures a little while ago, and then, briefly went into dormancy. If I remember correctly, Gabe said that the SDC group has a tendency to "re-pup" itself after exposure to temperatures below 45 degeesF. Some of my plants will exhibit the dry blotches on the leaves when they experience brief periods of drought, also.

i didnt think about that...it was touching the wall that has no insulation in it...it has been moved and it was watered and fed last night, this time i marked the calandar for feeding them. thanks for the insite guys.

i believe it is a member of the cavadish family. there are pics in the wiki. everytime i look in there i wonder if my hcm is gonna look that lovely one day. will be planting 2 of these outside the 1st week of may. i love the hcm, it is the first nana i ever got.

i checked the p- stem. its not soft or muchy at all. it will be better when i can start taking them outside for a few hours a day and then finally plant them outside. i just think they are tired of being cooped up in the house all the time( just like me) they are getting cabin fever. thank you for the help

I agree with Chong. I think your plant got too cold. I've seen my SDC do this before. I left my HCM out for the winter. It seems OK so far as our winter was even milder than usual. In fact, I have one banana with a huge bud already! I'd just cut the bad leaf that is rolled up and a new one should push out with warmer weather. Not to worry as long as the pseudostem is still OK!

It is very similar to the SDC in body size, but has higher blotches of red, but not quite as much as the Zebrina.

i really didnt notice the difference between the hcm and the zebrina till i bought a zebrina. i love my hcm, but i think that the zebrina has stolen my heart. i love varigated plants and the red markings on mine are just beautiful. i turned the little heater back on in the den and did some rearanging of the forest and its a little warmer in here now. i was trying to get them used to a little change in temp. but was trying to do it a little at a time. i guess the hcm's are just very cold sensitive. thats ok, the hcm's can live in the house with me in the winter. smile, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Super Dwarf Cavendish (SDC) is copyrighted by Oglesby International. So, most laboratories or nurseries cannot market the "very dwarf cavendish" under the name SDC unless they are licensed, or have purchased it from Oglesby, because of copyright infringement laws. Some SDC will have coloration very close to the High Color Mini. They are probably the same. The High Color Mini grows and behaves similar to SDC. According to Agristarts, it is a Cavendish. So, there, draw your own conclusion.
