Default Harvest

Hi, So, I harvested my dwarf bananas. I hung them inside and on day 3 they were still completely green. Then on day 4 they where all yellow. then on day 5 they had tons of black spots. Day 6 many where going bad, so I had to freeze them all. So, I have a question. How come bananas I buy at the supermarket last so much longer then then ones I grow? By the way, good thing I like to eat frozen bananas

i drive a truck over the road, and have shipped many many bananas{i hate to carry bananas!!!!!}have also spent a lot of time in Costa Rica and nicaragua...depends on type the are...picked early..temp control all the way..when i drop a load at dole or del monte..the temp box is checked, any big fluxuation they will refuse the load..reason being,,shipped at wrong temp ripen to soon, will not make it to market...thru temp and humidity you can either retard or quicken the banana to stay greener a little longer or to yellow a little faster...thay use the same type of banana,so eaiser to munipulate..we grow it all so trial and error...sorry so long..hope it helped..FYI..i hang mine in the bathroom{shower}when i want mine to ripen a little faster in the cooler months

I found this very interesting. We have a large container port, here on Staten Island. There is one huge warehouse, nicknamed, "The Banana House". It is a temperature/humidity contoled building which recieves Bonita brand bananas, from where ever they are grown.

One way you can avoid the problem of them all ripening at once is to harvest a hand (or a few fingers) at a time from the bunch when still green but filled out. If you chop down the entire bunch, they will all ripen at close to the same time.

Chimps were given the choice of organic or non-organic bananas at Melbourne zoo & they ate all the organic bananas first! Doesnt that tell you something??
