Default Hail damaged Banana?

We had a hailstorm yesterday here in Upstate NY and lots of plant are damaged with torn leaves etc. So with all the shredded leaves on my Musa Basjoo, should I expect slower growth? I hope not.....

No, I wouldn't think so. As long as the long as the leaves are still intact and are just torn you should be fine. They are pretty resilient.

Yeah, as long as the damage wasn't too extensive you should be OK. We had some small hail yesterday too but all of my bananas seemed OK afterwards. It didn't last too long luckily.

Thanks so much...that's great to hear!

Here are the before and after photos of my shredded Basjoo...
before the hail storm:

after:

The after picture didn't capture the full extent of the damage. IMO the leaves all torn up just aren't as attractive or impressive as intact leaves.

That damage "ain't nothing". Outside of aesthetics, of course. But for the health of the plant, it ain't nothing.

Hi Chris - I agree with Chong! You have nothing to worry about with such minimal shredding. They will soon be looking pretty again!!

While the core leave in the center isn't damaged the banana keeps growing. Treat it as usual and you be surprise about the bananos

Today I was remembered to the questions about hail damages.

I want to show you 3 pictures (not the best quality, but) of a nearly destroyed banana plant, that wasn't damaged by hail. I cut it (much worthier than hail) with a machete because the group of plants became too big for a garden. These bananas are reaching a height of 6 to 7 meters.

Picture hail03:

Look picture hail01 , that I took 9 month ago, where I cut the steam in a height of 80 cm (3 feet). And look the small steam that was growing later.

Picture hail01:

And on the pictures hail02 and hail03 you can see the result just before harvest, 2 month ago.

Picture hail02:

So, be patient, your plant will recover and you will have no problem when you are cutting bad looking leaves, but not the three highest.
