So how does the new unfurled leave get beaten by the next one that shouldn't even be there yet?

I, too, thought it was too much fertilizer, when I was using a heavy fertilizer regimen, but that has not always proved to be the case, as I have seen it in plants that had definitely not been over fertilized - sometimes one stalk in a group of two or three will show these symptoms, and the rest are fine.

I have to wonder if it also can be from inconsistent watering. Growth slows when dry, then a good watering excellerates the growth and shoves the new leaf into the existing.
Just a thought anyway. There are many variables - heat, water, fertlilizer, etc. And it doesn't seem to happen in any set pattern. I too have seen some plants grow out of this condition.

Mike, you may be on to something seeing how I cut the deep ground watering due to the curling leaves and went to light top watering every day and 2-3 mistings a day. I also just planted some small plants at the bases so maybe they are starting to pick up some of the liitle plants food source.

One of my "Apple" plants did this, with the two other trunks unaffected. No change in water, fertilizer, no root or soil disturbance, no discernable difference, but one plant out of three just went berserk, for a couple months, but now seems to be returning to normal.

i've only experienced this in the raja so far..

looks like leaf were ironed..

i spoke with don @ going-bananas a while back, his thoughts were the same as mikes. the plant is dry, so to speak..

leaves apparently need to be lubricated and without enough moisture, they kinda drag or hang??
but the stems have a powder to them, which i thought was lub..

i've added more mulch to the bed and hope for the best..

meanwhile will keep helping them to come out and grow..
