Got some musa 1780 fruit

Anyone growing this naner? Got some fruit still green, but filled in, and it's still ripening. Got it at a club members open house plant sale last week. It's a big guy. Supposed to be the first banana brought to the USA circa 1780, hence the name.

From the wiki ------- "1780 is a tall Zebrina. Great collector item

Origin can be traced back to Haiti on the island of Hispaniola. In 1783 Mr. Claude Tremé brought the banana to his plantation near New Orleans."

Fruit shape very much like Dwarf Orinoco. Will see. If it tastes like a cooking naner when all yellow I'll let it ripen further for maduros.

Well that solves the mystery as to why the SH-3640 is such a great banana: it was developed with super-duper future technology in the year 3640 and sent back in time.

Ate the first musa 1780 today. Very much like supermarket cavendish but blander. Very thick skinned. Here is the last one almost ripe. Modern cultivars are better.

Looks exactly like the "burro" bananas sold in some markets here -- Bluggoe / Orinoco. Did it taste any different from Orinoco?

Don't know. I don't eat Orinoco raw. It's a cooking banana.

I'll never waste space planting this one.

You're description sure sounds like the flavor of a raw Orinoco.
