Is it a good idea to get a banana plant right now?

My local high-end nursery happens to have a Mysore in a 25 gallon pot that has about a good 5 feet of p-stem and some pups. Would it be ok to get it now (or maybe within a few weeks) and just let it grow in the container during the winter or should I wait until spring? Night temps have fallen into the mid to upper forties already. I'm afraid somebody might buy it! I hope someone hasn't bought it already...

By the way, what is more wind resistant, Mysore or Ice Cream?

Buy it but protect it,

Give it a good mulch, or fleece the whole plant. I would house it frost free then let it out on sunny days.

You can buy it but give it some overhead protection like a patio. Mysore is tall and very thin so not good with the wind

You'd get a better deal by driving down to Tony's and buying several from him. At the same time you could pick up free plants from Richard. Go ahead and suprise dad and plant the whole yard to bananas! :D

Problem is I can't drive down because I don't have time when I'm preoccupied with other things, and my parents wouldn't anyways because it's too far. And it says on the wiki that Mysore is wind resistant and almost never blows over. I have a semi-sheltered spot I can plant it in anyways.

I have a south facing overhang I can put it under. Perfect! :D

I know nothing about Mysores and can only guess how they would react to climatic conditions in your area.
But here is some "sage" advice nevertheless: No matter if you buy it now or in spring, unless you want to make
it a one summer affair, you will have to solve the wintering problem anyway.

If I could get a banana, with red leaves here I would seriously consider buying it even now, even though I have
already covered my Basjoo for hibernation and we have experienced temps of -7^C (19^F) last night.

Good luck,
Olaf

I'm not really worried about cold here, as I live in zone 10. Mysore is also supposed to be pretty cold hardy. In fact, it says on webebananas.com that it's even more cold hardy than Raja Puri. Although I might move it inside during really cold nights so the leaves don't get frost killed, as some years we get frost a few times, sometimes we don't. The worst temperatures we've ever had in my area in the past few years are the high twenties, and only for a short period. My main concern is the wind, but also it says in multiple places, including the wiki, that Mysore is wind resistant despite its height. I have a place in mind that isn't fully exposed to the wind anyways, and I can easily tie it to something so that it doesn't fall over. I'm not planning on putting it in the ground until next spring either. Thanks! :D

I would definitely get it!

And in My experience, Ice Cream bananas have impressive cold tolerance. Mine Survived hurricane Irene (probably gusts up to 60mph in my yard) which shreeded my Basjoos, but only damaged the emerging leaf on my Ice cream banana. My Saba was also undamaged (another reason why its one of my favorite bananas!).

Good luck!

Wow! 60mph is pretty fast, although we can get faster gusts here. But if I plant it in a protected spot, it should be no problem. I plan on getting Ice Cream as well, and maybe I should take a look at Saba given I have another protected spot in my yard. It would look really good by the pool!

My Ice Creams get at least 2x wider pstems than my Mysores. The IC is much more wind tolerant - never had one blow over yet (knock on wood). Every time I've had a Mysore laden with fruit, it has blown over - luckily, the fruit was always far enough along that I could salvage the bunch. Mysores can grow up to 14ft and this can create a problem with the wind factor.

Mysores are slender, graceful, and beautiful with the lavender coloring and I love the fruit. I would not rate them particularly cool-tolerant - they tend to die to the ground at around 27-28F, while my Ice Cream pstems have survived 24F. Either way, they all come back in the spring - you just lose a season of growth.

What is meant by wind resistant ? It won't blow offer ?

Re: Is it a good idea to get a banana plant right now?

Yes, by wind resistant it means it won't blow over. It says that Mysore never blows over from high winds on the wiki. And temps here only occasionally get into the low 30s in my area, but only drop below 30 on very rare occasions. If needed, I could always wrap the p-stem. One thing about my area is that I'm not as much worried about cold as I am about wind.

Considering the level of expertise sunfish has given us in the banana and plant world, I think he was being sarcastic.

You're probably right :P By the way, I'm also interested in Praying Hands. How's the wind resistance on that one?
