This will be my first bunch of bananas!!
It sent out a flower at just 13 months old on July19th. It's kinda short at only 5 ft tall! I'm thinking the next one will get taller.

I'm glad you think so! We will see once they are ripe as well. I got this as a TC from Florida Hill Nursery so it's possible it's mislabeled as I heard that was common from them.

Your bud has the GF signature heart shape. I think it may be the American GF since two bracts are raised in one of your photos. My understanding is that the FHIA-1 GF only raises one bract at a time. I'm suppose to have a GF but it will only fruit next year.

Give us a taste report when you harvest!

I didn't know there were two types, so I went and read more about it, very interesting that there are offtypes because of tissue culturing. Hoping the taste is still good!

The same people who screwed up/caused the Blue Java/Namwa/Ice Cream controversy are responsible for the American Goldfinger/FHIA “True Type” controversy i.e. Agristarts. Your heart shaped bud looks like the real type with the exception of the two bracts lifting but maybe that was a one off or something. The real GF is also suppose to have rather large fingers like a cavendish and the American smaller more Namwa size fingers. I’m sure it will be good!

Thanks for the info!! Yeah I fell for the ice cream banana from florida hill nursery which is looking to be just a tall namwa, a very vigorous plant though so I don't mind. It produces pups like weeds!

Interestingly the patent for FHIA-1 lists "opening two or more bracts at a time" as a characteristic of the true GF. Hmm...

That is very interesting! So a couple weeks ago the last leaf dried up, so I ended up cutting off the bunch as I was told it wouldn't plump out anymore than it did without any leaves. Is that correct? It doesn't seem like these are ready to ripen at all, but I have them in a bag with 3 apples.

They ripened! Went from starchy to ripe in a day. They taste and smell almost exactly like the Manzano from the grocery store. Very surprised by that. Didn't know goldfinger had a subacid flavor. I really like them, I imagine they will be even better completely filled out.
