frozen plants
 

I stopped by the nursery today. and I noticed nanner plants that they never put in the greenhouse. we got down to 27deg last week, the pstem is mushy. they wanted to sell them to me for $10 for 5 gal plant they are dwarf giant. what do u all think should i buy them or let them find another sucker?

I'm no expert, but here's my thoughts, How long were they fully exposed at 27 degrees? " Them at $10.00 " all they have for ten dollars or 10 apiece, p-stem may be mushy but if the corm is ok it will come back, what is a dwarf giant? sounds like an oxymoron to me like Jumbo Shrimp, if you feel so moved and can spare ten bucks, I'ld buy one and check the corm, if it's good then go for what ever you want! But if the corm was frozen solid it won't come back, to my knowledge. Good Luck, maybe one of our more experienced growers will pipe in here with more info or ideas! Best Wishes :bananas_b

I would tell them $5 each since they were frozen and probably won't live. In a week they will probably toss them anyhow. Not very easy to sell in their condition. People like to buy fresh-looking plants.

I second that! Talk to the manager.

Just before Christmas, I saw some scraggly looking SDCs at Lowe's and I tried to talk the clerk into cutting the price down from the $10 tag, but she said that she couldn't do that. A week later, I was looking for something else, but stopped at the garden area, wherupon, I saw this large 7-foot Cinnamon Tree that had no price tag. I looked and I looked and saw nothing.

Then a couple of Lowe's people came to me and asked if they could help. I told them that I was just curious about the price of the tree. They immediately told me that the last price on it was $59.99. I thank them and started to turn away, when they said that they'd mark it down to $14.99, so I bought it. Then I asked the lady if she were Miss Kim. When she said yes, I said that I wanted to find out if she could give me a break on a couple of scraggly looking bananas. After some hunting, she finally found the 2 plants and told me that they worth at least $0.10, so again I bought them.

I looked around further, and found 4 other SDCs that were in great shape, and asked Miss Kim again how much they were, and she just wrote $4.99 on each of them.

It pays to ask!

More than lilkely the dwarf giant was an 'Enano Gigante' (translation, Little Giant). The pstem of these will go mushy under freezing. The corm may survive if not exposed too long and it is not too dry.

well i bought some of the plants today got them for five dollars apeice. I am not sure if i should cut them all the way back or not? Only the outer leaves on the pstem are mushy. any advice?

They look OK. I would just cut the dried brown leaves, not way back. Then keep them in a warm, well lit area. That's a good deal for the size of those plants.

And I wouldn't water them right away, unless they are completely dried out. If they have leaves, as some of yours do, then water slightly when the top couple inches is dried out. No full sun exposure right away either. Let them heal and adjust gradually as Chong recommended.
