Actually, I've already tried the sacrificial banana thing, to no avail. They're not interested in the bananas, only the plants.

Homeowners are on their own everywhere as far as animal problems. It is illegal to kill these pests but I plan on continuing. Came home today & there is a possum in trap -- 13th one. No trappings all winter cuz of snow.
If you don't get rid of them, they will get worse. Forget the repellants, they are more work & only last a little while.
GET TOUGH!
Anyone got a good recipe for possum?

What did you do w/ the squirrels when you trapped them?
I've trapped several with the trap set & NO BAIT -- they must smell that food was in there. Trust me, they are smart but not smart enough to figure out the trap! I've had squirrels walk on top of trap while a squirrel was in it. They were the next to get in trap.

Patty, you live in Wisconsin. The squirrels aren't as smart up there, believe me. I used to live in Iowa, and those squirrels weren't as smart, either.

Now that I've moved to Florida, the squirrels HERE are not only smart, they're evil, too!

I gave up with the Havahart trap because it got to be too much trouble driving 10 miles into the country to dump them. It's against the law here to trap them and let them go someplace else in the city.

But then, like I said, Gainesville is a truly idiotic city. They won't let you cut down an oak tree if it's the hanging doom of death right over your bedroom, and even more idiotic, get this: it's LEGAL to buy fireworks here (to set off in the middle of the night when the Gators win, but don't get me started on that one), but it's ILLEGAL to set them off (although, believe me, after the Gator games, they DO set them off...).

In other words, while I love the weather in Florida, there are times when I wish I was back in Iowa where it was quiet and the squirrels were stupid...and fewer.

I have heard that peppermint oil works. It burns their mouths when they eat it. I will be trying it this year before I get out the pellet gun.

If you only took those squirrels out 10 miles, they are back. My friend trapped some & tagged them...took them out more than 10 miles & saw them later WITH HIS TAGS ON. He says take them out at least 20 miles.

I would never drive 20 miles to relocate a squirrel! Off with their little heads I say!

I've been reading of other people with squirrel troubles and decided to check in with Nana Nut to see how the Kania trap worked out. I sent a PM and got the following glowing report!!!
Quote:
It worked unbelievably well!! I have taken out several HUNDRED. It has never failed and works every time.

The only "modification" I had to make was I don't use the built-in bait trap as it didn't work at all. Instead, I sprinkle sunflower seeds in the floor of the trap and slant it so the seeds all go to the back of the trap. I also had to put some wire mesh over the trigger mechanism because at first the squirrels simply delicately put their heads through it and ate the seeds without tripping it.

With these modifications, it works every single time, and I now don't even have the trap set most of the time because there ARE no squirrels in my yard. My neighbors have wondered where all the squirrels went...

The Kania is a bit expensive, but it's well worth it. I spent a fortune trying to cage up the banana plants, putting out "squirrel away" products, moth balls, castor beans, insecticidal soaps, various smelly things, a fake owl, pinwheels, netting, and even a motion-activated sprinkler system...nothing worked until the Kania.

Anyone seriously wanting to rid themselves of these things should buy a Kania.
wow!

They are a pain in the ass, especially if you're trying to feed birds like I do. Even with 2 worthless cats and a pack of dogs they didn't go away until I switched to safflower seed. When my neighbors moved in they came with an old tomcat named Ben and a birdfeeder full of sunflower seed. Thanks to Ben and their birdfeeder, squirrels are no longer a problem. That cat is a squirrel killing machine!

I have a friend across town who can't grow bananas because the squirrels destroy them. I didn't even know it was a problem because they've never touched mine.

Russell

Those pellet guns work nicely. This is the FIRST year we've had peaches due to my husband's "efforts."

Our pear tree was right next to the peach and was fully loaded. We didn't get a single pear.

Well Russel the best squirreling dog is a jack-russell. My neighbors had one that would darn near climb the tree and wait all day at the bottom on them. Ole minnie caught a lot of squirrelsand they got the treatment believe you me.. lol A violent thrashin' not to be recovered from. :^) My neighbors moved and I moved on to rely on Beeman. :^)

Your squirrels differ.
Ours are like squirrels on crack or crystal meth.
Ratty, skinny, boney, nappy-haired jittery things.
Up north squirrels.....nice and meaty

I bought a dwarf red haven peach tree this year from a local nursery. The chipmunks and the bluejays thought they were great. On youtube I notice that in England the gardens have fruit cages to protect small fruit trees. I'm going to have to try building one.
