Awesome link if you have not seen it before, I love my Tall Orinoco, and plan on trying them outdoors this next year over winter.

If you see a mat like that in my area they are always Basjoo. Cool! I will try it next year as well.
What's the best way to tell tall from dwarf Orinoco? I have a Orinoco plant that I got from Al in Oklahoma. He has been growing these same Orinocos for 50 years. I believe they are the tall Orinoco. 50 years ago, I do not think the dwarf was even available.
If you can get away with with a tall Orinoco, maybe a Raja Puri would perform just as well.

Re: Found cool Tall Orinoco pics.

I have both the Dwarf and Tall, the tall has a much thinner pseudo stem when about the same size as young plants, the leaf petioles are longer as well. They dont usually pup until they are at least 6 feet, and the dwarfs pup sooner. They are my favorite banana, very tough, cold hardy, very ornamental, and grow in clay. They also do not burn in the sun in 100+ temps like Basjoo do. I usually dig and store them bareroot under the house for 6 months in winter, but that will change if I can overwinter outside. I think mulch will do it, I have even overwintered wax begonias occasionally here with mulch. My Tall Orinoco usually get about 20 feet tall including leaves by their second year. I have tried to purchase Raja Puri twice and both times it was not Raja Puri, and I paid way to much for it the second time, so I gave up on that one, but its supposed to be hardy as well. I have 20 Tall Orinoco finally as I have been trying to build up a large number of them because I use them in my yard landscape, and I am going to leave a few out this next winter that are the largest and most established.

This is one of the close to 20 footers last year at digging time.

When I put mine away for the winter,it was 3 feet tall and had 8 pups. I think Al told me that they flowered at around 12 feet. I will grow mine in the ground next year and we will see what happens.

Might have pupped early because in container, I usually dont get more than 2 or 3 pups a year off mine because I dig and store.
