Default Flower Time

Flower time. Not sure the day that the flower popped up - But it was discovered today

Date: 17-MAR-14
Suspected Cultivar: Orinoco
PStem Height: 9 1/2ft
Circumference of Base: 2 1/2ft
Acquired: I acquired this from a local farmer who said "Common South Texas Banana". It shows the same characteristics to that of an Orinoco IMHO. However, I'm no expert.

And of course pictures - any feedback on cultivar is appreciated as well

I apologize for the pictures, I don't have the better camera ready at the moment. I will get some better pictures if needed.

Is that a Peach Thevetia Peruviana in the background?

Thanks Keith, No it isn't. I'm actually not sure what it is. It flowers pretty much all year around and then the flowers drop. I have only two peach trees, a Tropical Snow White and a June Gold, both which have fruit on them now. The problem with peaches for me is I need something with less than 300 chill hours...more like 200. I'm very limited.

Ok - I'm glad I was on the same track which is good to know. Might Banana recognition skills are sub-par.

My Peach Thevetia Peruviana also flowers all year and looks a lot like your plant.

Here's a photo.

Here's a photo.

hmm....it looks just like mine. What are the chill time requirements? When are the fruit normally ripe? June?

I can better tell you tomorrow during the daylight, I will take a closer picture of it because now you have me very curious.

That tree was here when we first moved in and I never paid any attention to it.

How is the fruit?

No worries as I never even knew what that tree was. It is indeed the same though. I've always noticed the flowers as that thing blooms pretty much all year. Nothing gained and nothing missed. I just now know it's toxic.

The Orinoco is showing about 4 hands as of yesterday.

I think it's a very special plant, it's the only tree I grow that doesn't bear fruit.
You're lucky the previous owners had good taste.

I too don't have many that don't bear fruit or can be used for consumption. I'm glad to finally know what it is.
