Fhia-18
So i had my first fhia-18 fruit today and it was fantastic. The bunch was a bit smal at 20 lbs, the fruit are short, but I guess that is par for the course on plant crop fruit. I was surprised it tasted better than its full sibling fhia-1. It was much shorter than fhia-1 and also had more pups. I'll post pics later.

Re: Fhia-18
Good to know. Thanks for the report.
I bought one as a gift for a friend last year and will get one of the pups soon. Especially the comparison with the Goldfinger FHIA 1 is very helpful as I had an eye on that variety for the future as well. |

Re: Fhia-18
Great to know. I finally have both planted. The FHIA-18 I have has been one of my slowest to grow varieties because I had it getting too much shade. Replanted one of the pups in full sun and let in more light for the original and now they're both taking off after 18 months in the ground.

Re: Fhia-18
Climates and how they effect taste?
FHIA - 18 ("APPLE" TYPE) I was just talking to the banana expert from NSW Agriculture, where FHIA-18 is beiing tested commercially. Fruiting height is around 4-4.5m, halfway between williams cav. and Lady finger. It is failing here in subtropical Australia, and is now considered by most people to be inferior to its 'sister' FHIA-1 (Goldfinger) in every respect. A shame... |

Re: Fhia-18
Does the banana expert from NSW Agriculture say why FHIA-18 is failing in trials?
Glad to hear FHIA 1 doing well. This one will always have a home at my digs as will SH 3640. |

Re: Fhia-18
In this study FHIA 18 was preferred the least by the testers. High fair average of 2.9. But it is just the peoples preference of that island. Could just be climate.

Re: Fhia-18
I think everyone has different tastes. I did notice that the peel didn't turn completely yellow. Much like cavendish it had brown specks when it was still pale green.
