Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
Hey ya'll,
It started to rain here around 11am today. That really fine soil saturating misting windblown rain. Been pretty steady. The winds have picked up a little bit. We are under a flash flood watch and tropical storm warning. Will keep ya posted. :kiteflyingnanergif: |
Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
I would say smaller nana's would be better lol, no seriously it is a shame you had some much damage it is a shame to see such lovely plants getting destroyed and whats worse there is so little you can do to help, although it seems the tie up worked on the other one though so that good. They where lovely plants though

Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
That stinks. I read in another thread about cutting off the leaves before a big blow. If mine get taller, I'm going to try that.
Hope the nana damage was all the damage you had though... He Kenzie, hunker down and stay safe. |

Jordon shows how he trimmed leaves on his Ae Ae to protected it ahead of Ernesto (along the left side, half ways or more down the page): Ae Ae bananas

Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
Faye blew over a few of my Velutinas, but they had already bloomed and were toast anyway sooner or later.
We have so much small branch and leaf debris on the ground, but thankfully nothing else bad happened...we aren;t flooded out like many in Central FL |
Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!

Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
The Saba and Pitogo both had good roots still attached so I opened up the holes, added K-Mag and Mackenzie Manure (95% manure, 5% sand as opposed to Black Cow - the opposite) and replanted them. The Saba was already in flower so had to give it a try. Splinted the Saba pup as it was bent, not cracked open. We'll see! Woof! Saba was HEAVY!
Saba mama supported 4 ways - not 2 Saba pup with splint Saba mama fruiting in spite of it all Pitogo may make it, eh!? |
Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
Good luck Bananimal - the way this season is going, I'm likely to be in the same boat sooner or later, so I'm very interested in your repairs. Hope it all turns out well - they are tough plants with strong self-preservation instincts.

You might be interested in the braces for the banana trunks. Bought a replacement boat trailer winch strap. Like seat belt material. Cut it up and sealed the cut ends with open flame. Took them to a seamstress and had loop ends sewed up with heavy thread. They will support the trunks without cutting in like rope, or a garrote. Regular HD poly rope tied from braces to marine galvanized 6" cleats on fence posts and Bobs your uncle - good for Cat 1 and 2 H'canes - but not for Wilma at cat 3. The 4x4 posts actually split open the cement footing in 2 dozen locs. Dan |

Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
Thanks for the tips Dan. Not many boats so not many chandlers here, but I can make something similar from the canvas I have, and I am a mean hand with the sewing machine myself having done sail repairs in the past (woman of many talents!!).
Good luck for the rest of the season Cassie |
Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
Wow Dan, it looks like the wind sucked the chlorophyll right out of the leaves! What causes them to become yellow like that?

Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
The Pitogo yellowed up from laying on its' side for 4 days with roots bared. This guy snapped off almost every root. Didn't know that at the time. The big Saba still had 50% of roots intact and buried so it remained pretty green. Did not try to asses damage by lifting them at the base until it stopped raining.
The friggin rain and lightning just would not stop for 3 days after they toppled. You see, I have a problem working outdoors in the rain with lightning popping!!! Fay's friggin feeder bands just kept coming and coming. As I said earlier, am seriously considering digging up and tossing Messers Saba and Pitogo. Just want to taste the fruit one time. They are too tall and heavy, and NO WAY will they get another chance to damage the pool enclosure! Saba and/or Pitogo pups anyone??? Stay tuned for next storm post --- "Hanna --- Take A Hike!!!". |
Re: Fay --- Go Away!!!
I would like either corms or pups of each banana. Mom or pup, whatever you want to get rid of is fine with me. PM me for details.
