Ensete Maurellii (Red) Post up your pics!
I have a few 2-gallon plants i got and have read that these can get up to 18 tall??? Does anyone here have some really large ones that they can show off to the group?
I was planning on planting mine in full sun, but someone told me that it will lose its red color if i do so. Anyhow, show off your pictures!! I want to see how big these guys really get.

Re: Ensete Maurellii (Red) Post up your pics!
Full sun will reduce the intense red but nutrition and ph may have a great deal to do with it as well.
Mine start out a very dark red with purple and become more green at 6'-7' . Last edited by Lagniappe : 03-24-2009 at 04:46 PM. |

Re: Ensete Maurellii (Red) Post up your pics!
I don't know about Maurelli, (I am just growing these for the first time this year) but, over the years we have produced 150,000 Japanese Maple seedlings, and the more sun the red ones get, the redder they are.

Re: Ensete Maurellii (Red) Post up your pics!
Here is a link that someone else posted here recently of a guy in Germany growing Ensete. You'll get an idea of how large they can grow. By the way, my experience is the same as Petes: after an extent, more sun seems to actually make them lose color. Not what I would have expected. Here's the link I mentioned: Bilder 2007

Re: Ensete Maurellii (Red) Post up your pics!
It occurred to me yesterday that someone mentioned that temperature was a factor in Maurelii's color. I believe Steveinfrance had mentioned that they stay darker in Europe because of this. That being the case, People with more mild summer heat may have different experiences than us in the deep South.
