Yeah, I don't really seem to know what affects the plant's coloration. It's been discussed here that it varies with temperature, sunlight and fertilizer. A recent thread suggested that fertilizer rates made it have more color. Mine has been fertilized and still has no color. Had a few leaves with color, then went back to green (and it's indoors now).

Thanks at least Im not the only one with the problem. Actually the irony is I gave it plant fertilizer just before it went inside, so I wonder if that has to do with it. Maybe its a combination of different factors?


Good news is that this green leaf seems to be comming up much faster than the red ones did.

Yeah, I'm starting to believe it's not unifactorial. I know Siam Ruby's color seems to be solely dependent on how much sunlight it gets...more sun, darker red. Plain and simple (and will show noticeable changes in a day or two even on existing leaves). EVM coloration seems a LOT more complicated.

And for the record....I don't know what I'm doing wrong with mine. Pretty sure it just hates me. I've ALWAYS had issues with it right from the start. I don't do anything differently from the rest of my plants (and they all do wonderfully) but the EVM is fastidious, apparently and always had weird thin/transparent parts of its leaves and inconsistent coloration. I kinda wanna just give it away to someone and use the space for something less touchy LOL.

These plants are kind of a mystery. I sent a small "normal" colored one to a member in Texas which should have been warmer/ brighter etc and it promptly turned in to a "normal" E. Ventricosum. Pure green!!! You just never know.

they defantly will color deeper if its cooler but they need to be fed well however they go throw a dry peroid in the winter so dont over water them let it dry conpleatly out betwean waterings if its in a low light room they are exstreamly suseptibal to rot when they are young and even when older but less so dont water directly on the leafs or stems pour the water just on the soil make sure it gets plenty of sun light to keep it from going dormet if you let a smal plant go dormet its likly to die do to a lack of corm size IE not enough anergy to make it threw the winter i hope that helps they grow in the high lands of ethopea and all along the easter parts of africa at farly high altituds so they can take some cold they will servive out in the open in zones 8 thew 10 but they do beter if they get that low of about 50 in the winter going dormet

Sorry you guys are having problems with yours. I bought a Siam Ruby this year and we never got along. However, my Maurelli turned out to be a monster. I'm guessing some sun may redden it up. My leaves would come out green and then become redder. It was in full sun. If you do decide to give it more sun introduce it slowly. Here it is when I planed it in May:

Thanks alot you guys! So far the leaf comming out has been completely green, but their is a small trim of red on the leaf so maybe it will still color up a little. I lowered the heat in the room so now it gets to about 65-70 in the morning. Hopefully that will help it get a little more color.

I hope our summers are cool enough for it. Lows are rarely below 70 but usually at around 70. Highs in the summer are typically in the mid to upper 80s.

Also nice looking ensete micheal andrew. Thats alot of color. I hope mine looks like that some day!

I'm in the same spot somewhat; I have 4 very young maurellis purchased from members here; they're just now fully established and growing well (slow and steady). A bit of color, at the tip mostly. Going into the fall with cooler temps, I haven't yet fed these young plants as I'm clueless with regards to fertilizing, and don't want to risk burning their young roots.

I have water soluble medium-low-high fertilizer, recommended dosage at 2 tbps./2 gallon container. Do I feed ALL plants with 1 2-gallon container? I've seen my diplania blooms leached out from deep blood red maroon after being fed (with the same 2 gallon container with recommend dosage; I mean i fed ALL plants with the same water--not just the diplania).

How would experienced growers here feed these 4 plus 2 other very small plants--using a 2 gallon container?
